When do you consider the first trimester over?

I know different people have different ideas anywhere from 12 - 14 weeks. When do you guys consider the first trimester finished and the second beginning?

I think I tend to go with 13 weeks 3 days...but I know I start feeling "better" at the 12 week mark. I know that's what I'm shooting for right now....especially because my next appointment is at 12 weeks.

I am saying 12 weeks to myself, because I think it will relieve some stress in my own mind. Getting to 12 weeks is a big deal to me, I would HATE to have to push it to 14 weeks, I think my brain would explode!

Hmmmm... all the care providers I've seen (family practice, OB, and midwife) have said the second trimester begins with the first day of the 14th week.

But obviously it's not like someone throws a switch or pushes a button or anything! And I've seen 12 weeks given as the dividing line as well... though that is generally in books/websites that are focusing more on "months". As in "the first trimester lasts three months".

Personally we're not telling family till after 14 weeks if we can avoid it. But that's us.

I don't know when it's officially over, but I can tell you I'm done with it. Right. Now. Ugh.

I like using 14 weeks periods for trimesters. That makes for a 42 week pregnancy and I like to plan on making it to 42 weeks so I don't get to upset when I go past my "due date".

I've always heard 12 weeks, but lately, I hear 14 weeks more and more. I'll probably wait until 14 weeks to consider myself safely through the first trimester. Counting down the long, miserable days...

The second tri starts at 13 weeks.

I have always heard 12. But usually hold out till 13 weeks to feel safe.

I wonder if the difference (between 12 weeks and 14 weeks) is a result of the two different ways in which pregnancy can be dated? You know, the "two weeks" prior to implantation that some books/providers add and other don't?

Or maybe it's a matter of looking at pregnancy as 9 months (so three sets of three, or 12 weeks) versus 40 weeks (closer to 10 months, with each trimester being a slightly different lengths)?

It's a neat question though

That's a really interesting thought! I hadn't ever thought of it from that perspective.

for me 2nd trimester starts the first day of the 14th week.
So still a little time to go.

I do start relaxing a little after 12 weeks though

I say 13 weeks because the 40 weeks divided by three is 13.333333 and rounded down to the nearest whole.....14 weeks would be in second tri with some to grow on.

I was always told 14 weeks? the first is 14, second 27, third 40 or birth?

I think it evenly works out to 13 weeks 4 days? Who knows? LOL

13 weeks I have an app on my iPhone that says I will be in my 2nd trimester next week, which would be 12 weeks.. but I say 13 weeks 3 days officially.

I always thought it was 13 weeks

I was always told and almost every pregnancy book I've read says 14 weeks (12 weeks gestation).

I just checked the literature my OB's office gave me...and I guess they consider 13 weeks to be the beginning of the 2nd trimester. That'll work for me.

I don't know why it makes THAT much difference...isn't the baby a fetus after 12 weeks? Or is it earlier?
