babywearing during vacations - any suggestions?

Hi,
I'm planning an overseas trip to Southeast Asia in March. I think I'm going to need a new babywearing apparatus. I currently have a few slings and the moby wrap, but my baby will be 13 months on our trip and I'm thinking that for as much walking as we'll need to do, the slings won't cut it and the moby wrap will be too hot. Is there something I can buy that will be good for a back carry? I'm thinking that might be the best way to carry him around but it's hard to do with the slings and moby that I have. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Christine

You might consider a gauze-style wrap. You can bunch up the straps on the really hot days. Otherwise I'd try a mei tai. Good ventilation and easy/fast to get on and off. Great for back carries, too! Maybe even a mei tai with wrap straps?

If you are used to wrapping, then I would stick with that. If not, then I would invest in a carrier designed to be worn a little differently - like an Ergo or Beco (or other Soft-Structured Carrier). These carriers adjust easily from wearer to wearer, are made with heavy duty materials (that will stand up to long periods of wearing), and are comfy for back carries. They are great for up & down, as well.

I'd vote for a soft structured carrier as well. They're more supportive than a mei tai, and nothing to drag on the ground like there is with a wrap or mei tai straps. It's very quick and easy to get your baby up on your back by yourself (although it will definitely be worthwhile to practice and be comfortable with it before you go!)

That said, if you have a ring sling you love, take it along as well. It won't take up much space and sometimes you want something for a quick hip carry.

I would also vote for an SSC--however, you probably ought to do some trying out of a few before you purchase one--you don't want to end up with one that is a poor fit or causes pressure points. GL!
