what type of stuffing/batting to use?

I want to make a moses basket for our baby due this summer. I plan to buy a plain (no bedding included) moses basket and make my own pad and bedding.

I saw some very comfortable looking organic moses futons, but they were close to $100. I"m sure I could come up with something similar for less.

Obviously I want it to be padded and comfortable, but not too squishy. I'm trying to figure out if I should make a shell and stuff it with loose wool or cotton stuffing, or buy wool or cotton quilting batting and sew it a couple layers thick (I was looking at warm and natural cotton batting or quilter's dream wool batting). I"ve never seen these batting in person, so I don't know how many layers I'd need to make a comfortable pad for the baby to nap on.

So if you've worked with or seen these, what would be best?

1. loose cotton stuffing
2. loose wool stuffing
3. cotton batting like warm & natural
4. wool batting like quilter's dream

I've been wondering the same thing- we got a basket from a friend but the pad that came with it is super thin and you can feel the basket weave right through it. I'd also love to hear people's thoughts!

I think I'd use wool batting. It will feel warmer than cotton, and you'll get more squish with less weight. I'd opt for batting over loose wool, because loose wool could bunch up.

I 2nd the wool batting- it's naturally flame retardant, too.-

West Earl Woolen Mills- 1 717-859-2241 has beautiful wool batting sold by the pound.

Thanks to those that suggested the Wool Batting, I think I'll give that company a call.

Any idea how much of it I'll need to make a comfy pad for the basket? I've never worked with wool batting so I don't know how lofty it is or how much it will compress, etc.

How tight is your budget? One lb is probably enough, but if you might use it on something else later, I'd get more. I purchased a pound to use for doll stuffing, and it is a good sized roll. It fills and overflows a grocery bag. You could ask customer service when you order, too. They'd know more than me!
