InkHeart - Page 2

I'm glad to hear ok reviews. My oldest DD (almost 10 years) really struggles with reading and I've bought just a TON of different books to try to entice her to read more. No real interest.

The only sure fire way I've discovered ATM is to tell her if she reads a book that has a movie based on it we'll go see the movie. We will not see the movie until the book is read. Movies are a special treat for us. We've seen both Spiderwick and Hotel for Dogs due to this agreement. The more she reads, the more she has been getting into it and its going smoother for her. BUT she is not at that "reading for the heck of it" stage yet. After each chapter she finds me and tells me whats happened as well so I know she is actually reading it too.

I just picked up Inkheart for her this week and she started reading it tonight. The size of it is a bit daunting but she's determined to get through it so we can see the movie.

I saw InkHeart at the store (Actually it was misplaced on a shelf near the book aisle).

I picked it up and read the back cover, flipped thru a bit... almost put it back but then it asked me to take it home, so what was I going to do?

I devoured it. LOVED all the references to other books at the top of each chapter!

I want to read the sequel now. DH also read it, he's been looking forward to the movie from the previews, so I am glad I bought the book first.

Just a warning about the sequel: the ending is VERY unsatisfying. To me, it reads like she wrote the last 2 books as one book, but broke it up into 2 because of the length. Inkheart and Inkdeath end with "real endings." Inkspell ends with the feeling that you've just finished a chapter, but not the whole book.

I recomend finishing Inkspell and then immediately beginning Inkdeath.

One of these days, I want to write down all the books referenced in the opening chapters of all 3 books, then read all THOSE books. This project would be a heck of a lot easier if I actually owned the Inkheart trilogy, instead of just borrowing them from the library repeatedly.

Dd and her friends saw the movie and liked it very much. Nothing disappointed them. It wasn't spectacular, but after the Twilight movie she learned not to expect too much from movies based upon beloved books.

I think the poor writing is not nearly as prominent when you are reading it to yourself; but if you read it aloud, you find yourself tripping over terribly formed sentences, over words that do not flow together at all. It was so bad I could barely finish it, and I told the girls they would have to read any sequels themselves.

It's too bad; the story itself is wonderful. I assume in German it flows and is beautiful. They need to fire their translator, though, as she was terrible. It's like they typed it into some online translation service and left it at that.
I read Thief Lord to dd and I hated the experience. It was so hard to read out loud. That's when I learned Funke is German and we were reading a translation. I could barely wait to finish reading it. I told dd, you're on your own, read the rest to yourself.

Makes me wonder what it's like for non-English readers to read a translated Harry Potter. Is it any good in German?

DH and I watched Inkheart last weekend. I liked it a lot better than the book. I liked the way they changed it around a bit. DH has never read the book. He thought the movie was okay (he had his heart set on watching Slum Dog Millionaries so that could be partly why he wasn't into Inkheart that much)
