Back Carrier Recommendation

What is your favourite back carrier for doing housework and cooking?

I have a wrap and a ring sling, but would like something I could use on my back. Right now my DS is 3 1/2 months old.

I don't have a wrap myself, but I know moms that do and use theirs for back carries...hopefully you will get some advice on that.

I have zero coordination and find it really hard to get babe on my back in anything...that said, we have finally (at 8.5 months old) mastered back carries in the Ergo and I love it. I carried DS1 on my back in a mei tei sometimes but I didn't find it as comfortable. Somesday maybe I will get the guts to try a wrap on my back...I love the idea of it holding baby so close, but like I said, I don't do well working blind, so I find the Ergo helpful just cause there is something there to help support him while I maneuvre him into position.

I love a wrap for housework! My baby is a little younger than yours, and we really like a rucksack carry on the back. I've done other back carries with a wrap too, with my older child, and they're great. I also like my Kozy for back carrying a toddler, and my Ergo as well -- it's nice because there's no bulk, and it's quick to put it on. Your son may not be quite big enough for the Ergo yet, so you may need to give it a couple of months. But really, the rucksack is working great for me right now -- my baby can peek over my shoulder and then snuggle against my back when he gets sleepy.

How do you do a rucksack carry? I have a Moby Wrap, and wondered if I could try a rucksack carry with that.

Thank you for the tips!

you will be able to do it w/ your moby but it will sag & probably not feel secure.

I would not recommend a Moby Wrap for back carries. It really upsets me that the company promotes it as suitable for back carries because IMO it's unsafe for anyone except a very, very experienced wrapper. It's just too stretchy and not secure enough for a good secure back carry.

My vote would be for a mei tai as the easiest to learn a high back carry with (and you can do legs out if your LO doesn't like to be froggied any more). You could also try a Beco Butterfly; I was able to do a legs-out back carry with my dd at 3 months in it. But YMMV; I had a very big and tall 3 month old.

I love my Babyhawk (mei tai) for back carries around the house. It just makes life so much easier.

mei tai -- i have a kozy. it's so easy. i've used the wrap too when the mt is being washed but it doesn't feel quite as secure -- which is more a function of my own lack of practice with the wrap for back carries...

My son is also 3.5 months. I've been carrying him in a front carry with a Wrap n Wear, and he loves that, but he's getting heavier and want to transition him to a back carry (in a better wrap, if need be). I also have a BabyHawk, which I haven't used much because DS prefers the front carry in the wrap to the front carry in the BH, and because the wrap feels more comfortable to me.

With practice, is it pretty easy to do a back carry in a wrap without assistance (I am a single parent)? Do people find back carries in wraps to be more comfortable for the person wearing the baby, or would the BabyHawk be just as good?

Thanks,
Jen

I think so, imo.
stretchy wraps are not as supportive, thus, not as comfortable as mei tais (such as BH).
Quirky's suggestion of a Beco Butterfly is truly worth checking out, though, since you can use that carrier for other purposes as well and it's really easy to learn.

eta: woven wraps comparable to the comfort level of a mei tai.

I loved using a Kozy.

Yeah, I would not recommend a Moby for a back carrier, as it's just not supportive enough for that.

For back carries, I like using a mei tai or a wrap, since I can get my kids high on that and they like riding high enough to see over my shoulder a bit. I also find them both very comfortable to use (though a wrap has better weight distribution). My favorite mei tai is Kozy and my favorite wraps are Neobulle and Hoppediz, because of their support and width.

Here's me wearing my son on my back.

And here's a link for really good wrapping instructions:

Thank you for all the suggestions. I had to return my ring sling because I'm too wimpy and need something with more support. Now I want a mei tai, I just have to choose one!

Are all mei tais supportive enough if you baby falls asleep in them?

baby hawk or catbird baby.
one has a high back the other has a hood.
