Best Babywearing "Thing" for Farm Chores?

or a newborn or young babe, what do you use for livestock/land work?

I'm thinking a wrap with a back carry would be the best thing, but am not sure. I don't have any major chores to do daily, just caring for chickens, horses, rabbits and checking up on cattle.

I have beautiful silk slings from my days of city life, an Ergo that I adore and a heavy cotton sling that's a workhorse, but a little hot for much of the year in Houston.

Lay it on me.

(I crossposted this from the slow and quiet country living forum. I don't really expect you guys to be real farm familiar, but I thought you give me an idea, anyway. Not too hot, easy to clean, etc. I've been thinking maybe a Moby Wrap.) :

Moby wraps are not good for back carries (too strechy). I would guess that the ergo would be the best for farm work (but not the best for a newborn). Maybe a diy cotton gauze wrap? Mamatoto has directions.

we don't have any animals yet, but i live in farm country on what i hope will one day be a working farm

i think a Kozy would be perfect. it's awesome for back carries with newborns, it's sturdy canvas that takes a beating and doesn't mind frequent washings, and because it's tall in the body and made of canvas it's an awesome carrier for older/heavier babies and toddlers too. and you can usually find one used for $50 or less ppd. my Kozy is my work horse carrier - it puts up with tons of abuse and lots of washing and has held up extremely well.

as the pp mentioned, the moby is not good for back carries. a woven wrap would certainly work, but those tend to be pricier. i also personally find wraps to be a little hot, and i also find that to get the fabric perfectly comfy on my shoulders that it restricts my movement a little bit. so i find something with structured, padded shoulders to be better for getting work done than a wrap or wrap-style straps that 'cup' the shoulder.

I'd go for a MT as well -- it's easier to master the high back carry with a newborn IME. I love Kozys, the newer Sachis (you'd have to look for a gently used one as they're not being made any more ) or a ToddlerHawk (taller than a babyhawk and I love the headrest).

congrats on your baby-to-be!
