My deodorant is failing me - Page 2

I have a sweating disorder. When I was younger I used heavy duty anti-perspirants and since they didn't work well anyway I decided to give up.

I can get so stinky though. I'm too cheap to buy the funk butter, so I made my own. I've got sensitive skin and it works well.

In a small glass jar I miss equal amounts baking soda and cornstarch then I mix in enough coconut oil to make a paste. It works so well and it's cheap.

My skin gets angry at plain baking soda, but add in an equal part of coconut oil and it's lovely.

So, for Funk Butter users...is it only available online?
I'll try the crystal roll-on or spray and maybe do a little chemistry project with baking soda and something scented (i do like a little fragrance).
Thanks!

Yes I think it is only online thorugh Oyin Handmade. I always buy in bulk - I buy for a full year - so shipping doesn't irritate me as much. I just bought up before the holidays (stocking stuffer!) ... maybe just maybe when I'm done with this batch near the end of the year I'll consider mixing my own - it does seem like something you could do yourself.... but being the stinkmeister that I am, it makes me nervous!

I put on coconut oil after a shower, and then dust myself with cornstarch before getting dressed to leave the house. And I wait tables for a living, so I have to smell decent. What I use has worked for me just fine. I've noticed that mainstream deodorants/anti-perspirants have me smelling worse after just a couple of days.

CAn you tell me how much you use, does it dry, and if it doesn't, does it leave a stain on clothes? I am imagining that the coconut oil would stain from the oil.

The deodorants we buy at Wal-Mart or Target for $3 are called "Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal Roll-On" and "Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal Spray".

This is what I use. After 6 months of searching, I fell in love with this stuff. I've tried a few homemade baking soda/oil mixes, Funk Butter, Thai Crystal stone, Jason's, Tom's of Maine, and I think several others. Apparently, baking soda and my armpits just do not get along. It was painful (and the Funk Butter includes baking soda, so it did the same thing). And Jason's and Tom's just didn't seem to work. The Thai stone worked great until it got stinky, and I couldn't rid it of the stink no matter how I tried. But the spray is amazing. I it! I'm never stinky, and I can skip a day or two with no problems. It's got no baking soda, and because it never touches the skin, it can never get stinky.

I'm intrigued by the funk butter and the homemade varieties! I'm wondering if adding a drop or two of my own essential oils would be grand? Gotta try it.

This topic has been on my mind for years. Tom's isn't working, but I didn't want to do convential. I've tried many, many.

I read the other day that wheat grass juice is awesome for body odor. I'm very motivated to go get a shot/day. It's only $1.99. ... just to see if I notice a difference. Who wants to be stinky? or funky?

Good luck everybody! If anyone finds a mixture that purrrrfect, please post!!

FWIW, Tom's works pretty well for me if I spray my pits with some sort of alcohol (like a body spray or just plain rubbing alcohol) first, let it dry, then put on the Tom's. It's a two-step process and sort of a PITB, but it does help. At least til summer anyway.

What a name: Funk Butter! It's priceless! Seriously though, I'm going to check that out.

I read somewhere that armpit odor is caused by hormones and bacterial growth. I've tried Tom's, which stung, and went back to the standard commerical brands.

I make a point not to wear antipersperant after I take a shower if I'm staying at home, hoping to rebalance my natural state. I will also add a few drops of tea tree oil and water on a wash cloth and wash under my arms as tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal. It really seems to help and I've found myself leaving the house without anything and fine for a few hours with just the tea tree oil.

As for sweating, I'm not sure...

DH continues to use the crystal roll on and it works well for him. I used it for many years and loved it, until I got a terrible rash last spring. So I went without deodorant for a while and stopped shaving and ended up trying ALVERA brand Aloe vera deodorant. Works better than plain soap & water but I wouldn't run a marathon... I'm tempted by the baking soda/coconut oil, but I'm guessing I'd get a rash from that also--I've been washing my hair with baking soda rinses and my scalp has started to get itchy...

I tried natural deo's for a while but they never really worked for me. So now I make my own deodorant butter. It's so easy and ten times cheaper than buying it online. Unrefined shea butter, coconut oil, baking soda. Don't worry about measuring exact quantities, just use small amounts and you can adjust as you go. Place room temp butter and oil together in a mixing bowl and whip like heck with a whisk. (if it's too cold to mix, set it in a warm place overnight to soften) Once the mixture is loosened up, add the baking soda til you like the thickness. I find that I like a looser mix than Funk Butter, it feels scratchy to me so I make mine softer.

Make small (one ounce) amounts and see what texture/ratios works best for you. Add a drop or two of eo's if you like for scent and additional deodorant properties.

My favorite place to get the unrefined shea (don't bother with refined, it doesn't seem to have the same effect) is agbangakarite.com. One pound will last a very long time and is plenty to share with a friend or use for other things too like balms and body butters.

Baking Soda

Just a little heads-up. If you react to one deodorant, homemade or purchased, that contains baking soda, you will most likely react to any that contain baking soda. It is a common irritant for many folks - you can guess how I was forced to learn this. Ouch!

How long does it take for you to find out if you have issues with bs? I have been using in sparingly for a while and love how well it works but am afraid to use it everyday because I hear of so many people having problems. I only use it when I know I don't want to stink like the days I have lecture right after gym class and don't have time to shower. I would like to us bs daily but am afraid of developing a rash/irritation and then I don't know what I would use, maybe the crystal...

I bookmarked this blog post and I've been thinking about trying both the aromacreme and making my own
