I absolutely LOVE reading this forum - it's nice to see such an educated and like-minded group of people.
I don't have any sons - I'm the mum of two girls - I will never have a son since we don't plan on having anymore children, but I am rabidly anti-circ.
I come from English immigrants, therefore knowing that foreskin was a normal part of the male anatomy made me question why boys over here were circumcised. Thankfully, I live in Canada where the rate has certainly declined since the time that I was born ('76).
During my late teens and early '20s I didn't care too much about circumcision until I was in a hospital nursery where a newborn was being circumcised. I was shocked. Afterwards I did more research which solidified my stance on the matter.
I have a difficult time hearing about friends who have circ'd their sons. I remember being pregnant with my first and telling a close friend of mine that if my baby was a boy there was no way in hell I was going to circumcise him. She was surprised that it wasn't really routine anymore.
I got the "foreskins are gross" and "I wouldn't trust my son to clean himself properly" as well as a few other common myths hurled at me, but I still hoped that when she ended up having her son three years later she would at least do some research. It was quite emotional for me when she told me she had circ'd him - or "had him fixed".
I'm also the mother of a premature baby - my firstborn was born at 31 weeks, and the thought that parents still put their sons through such a useless and painful procedure after all they've been through tears me apart. I of course hate to hear about it with full-term babies, it's just that it's like an extra slap in the face for me when I hear about preemies going through it - after seeing how rough of a start my daughter had.
Anyway, this is just a brief intro. I'm sure I'll be posting more - mostly to vent!
Thanks for reading!
