is there such a thing as a bear proof composting bin? there are tons of black bears here, and i don't want to encourage them into our yard anymore than they already are.

An indoor worm composter is about the only thing I can think of.
Where we live, the town asks everyone not to compost food waste, and to keep barbeques in bearproof sheds, and to not put out bird feeders in bear season, all this along with other standard bear safe tactics.

Here's a great website: http://www.bearsmart.com/

We had these at the school I worked/lived at in Wyoming. The barrels were the same but we had aluminum stands that allowed the buckets to flip end over end. Bears got them and mangled the stands but were not able to open the containers and get into the food. The barrels got taken off the stands and set on end to act as repositories for scraps all winter. In the spring, we had a three bay (two pallets by two pallets for each bay) composting area into which the food scraps got mixed with browns. To my knowledge, we had no bear problems with the open bays. They did not have lids. We were in the Tetons/Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem - plenty of bears!

Nothing is "bear proof". Having a tumbler composter in your garage might work, using it for the attractive food scraps and the compost heap for things like coffee grounds and ferret litter.

As long as you don't try to compost meat or too much fruit at once, the trench composting I explain in this article might work. It's having all that rotting food in one spot in the compost heap that attracts bears. Spread it out and it's too much work for the amount of food and they'll wander off.

Do you currently have a compost bin that is causing trouble?

I have one like this: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Compost...3270141&sr=8-3

and for some reason, the bears haven't gone after it. (Or maybe it's just that they prefer the regular garbage )
