I've only done it when my kids were 8 and 6. I know in the rare case that someone were to try and steal the car, they would know for sure a kid was in it. That's my fear with leaving a small child in the car.

I also won't leave my younger son in the car alone - he's 9. He also has a very timid personality, and gets scared quite easily. My 11 year old usually won't want to stay in the car while I run into a store even.

I, too, don't understand how a car can get stolen unless the keys are in the ignition... and who does that anyway? --kid left in it or not.

eta: I mean, I do know *how* they can wire a car to drive off with it (mine was stolen when I lived in Denver) but that's not something that can possibly be done in a matter of seconds while you are checking the mail. Unless Jack Bauer's jacking your ride
