I've never had any luck with ring slings for newborns. They're just so...finicky. Once the babe can sit up in a hip carry, then I can use the sling, otherwise it just never seems to work.
I'd go with a stretchy wrap for a newborn, and of all our different wraps and slings and such my husband only really *likes* the mei tai.
