Exemption Help

I'm in school for Medical Assisting (CMA - AAMA) and I'm in my clinical semester. Unlike nursing, we do our clinicals at school, instead of in the hospital. Then this summer I will do my externship in a physician's office.

My clinical instructor handed out a form for vaccinations that we "need to have completed" by April (I think April). I need to ask her if it is the SCHOOL that is "requiring" these vaccines before we students go to our externship, or if it is the externship sites (physician's offices) that are "requiring" these vaccines before we students come to their office for our externship.

If it is the school, I know I can file a religious exemption. However, if it is the externship sites, am I able to file an exemption? (I live in Indiana) We won't be employees of their practice, just student externs. I'm not sure where to find information about this. I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

Also, my parents vaccinated me as a child. I'm now 24 years old, and Indiana has a CHIRP program (vaccine registry for the state). Would my information be on the registry? CHIRP stands for "Children and Hoosiers Immunization Registry Program" so the "and Hoosiers" part leads me to believe it is not just children, but I don't know how long this program has been used. I have a form to remove my oldest daughter from the CHIRP (since she has had some vaccinations and Indiana is an all or nothing state), so I can make a copy of the form for myself if needed.

I also know that the chair person of our program was not aware that exemptions existed (amazing, since she's an RN ) so I fully expect there to be an issue with me turning in an exemption if it is the school that is asking for these vaccines. I think I'm going to need help writing an exemption letter, after I become fully aware off all of my rights as a college student and extern in a medical office.

Any answers, help, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

I would think you could use a religious exemption either way.

The school requirements - obviously

As far as the externship - not allowing religious exemption would be discrimination and I don't think anyone wants to go there.

You are allowed to have a religious epiphany at anytime. That this would happen after you are out of your parents medical control is irrelevant. Just because your parents vaccinated you against your religious beliefs before you were allowed to object is no reason to deny an exemption.

I just wanted to say that I had applied to work at LAUSD and the medical doctor and nurse there took turns yelling at me because I had refused a physical on religious grounds. I told them I was a Christian Science and they told me they did not care. They had objected to me getting a physical from a DC. I decided that I really did not want to work there as it appeared to be too much of a hassle.

I am looking for work again, and this may come up. I would get a physical, but I would not want to be subjected to vaccinations. Choose your battles.

I hope it all works out for you.
