Need help with knitting pattern

The pattern is for a pair of lace slippers. I know how to follow the stitch instructions. My problem is that I don't understand if it's supposed to be done in pieces or all together. It starts with instructions for the lace panel. After 24 rows it says the lace panel is complete. Then it goes on to instructions for the sole headed like this: Sole (make 4) and starts with, "Beg at toe end, cast on...". Then there are instructions for the upper that starts with, "Beg at toe end, cast on...". Then it says, "Place Lace Panel" and gives instructions the next row so I think this is a continuation of the upper. At the end it gives instructions for sewing the center back seam of the upper and then sewing the upper to the sole.

My question is, am I supposed to make the lace panel and then somehow sew it onto the rest or am I supposed to knit the lace panel as a continuation of the upper?

I hope this makes sense. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need more info, let me know. TIA

Ye gads, that sounds like a horribly written pattern.

At a guess, you're knitting two soles and stitching them in double-thickness, right? I would assume that the lace panel is to be knitted as part of the total number of stitches cast on, but I'm struggling to visualise how you can cast on beginning at the toe end if the seam is at the back. Have you tried casting on and knitting the lace pattern as part of the body of the slippers? Would it work within the stitch count?

Could you tell me the name of the pattern so I can go run it through ravelry? That might help...

It's a Paton's pattern called The Lace Slippers. The pattern starts with instructions for the lace panel worked over 13 stitches but it doesn't say anything about casting on with that. Then, after starting the upper starting at the toe and casting on 17 st, it goes to "Place Lace Panel". In that part, you work the next row from the Upper and do some of the lace panel pattern. It doesn't seem to use all the rows for the lace panel, though. It is very confusing to me. Thanks for the validation. It's nice to know that it may be the pattern and not me.

I just went to Ravelry and looked it up. I didn't know you could do that there. Very cool! I listed it as my current project. When I searched it 3 projects came up but I only got info for one.

So who are you on ravelry, then?

It might just be telling you that you're starting the sole at the toe end so that you know which end is which when it comes to assembly.
