The CDC wants babies to get 4 doses of the polio vaccine...at what point/age do they switch it to only 3 doses?
They don't. It's 4 doses for kids and doses for adults depend on traveling and workplace.

I keep hearing that any year now they're going to take it off the schedule...

OK I sworn I read somewhere that if you need to get it as an adult for travel you just need a 3 vax series.

In Virginia- the law for school entry is 3 doses. HOWEVER, if you only get 3, one of them must have taken place on or after the fourth bday. However if your child has 4 at any time, they are good to go. So basically in VA, don't know about other states, you only need 3- but they'll tell you to get 4. So they can get them all in early.

Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for.

ETA:

BTW I found where I saw the 3 shot series thing, it is on page 232 of The Vaccine Book.

I really wish they would take this one off the schedule.. there hasn't been ONE wild case of polio in the entire country in like what - 30 years is it?

We don't vaccinate for malaria in the U.S. and other deadly diseases of other countries and nobody is running around scared silly, so why in the world are we still vaccinating for polio?

I thought I read somewhere that other countries have already stopped vaccinating for polio - is this true and if so which countries? Has polio made a comeback there as a result?

The only way to get polio in North America since 1979 is to get the vaccine or stand next to a child who has just been vaccinated. Just ask Lenita Schafer who got polio from her daughter's diaper in 1988 (Money Magazine December 1996). And the Father-in-law of Jenna Bush who got polio in 1973 from his son's diaper. He is also the former lieutenant governor of VA and is in a wheelchair. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_H._Hager

"Federal officials were/(are) aware that each year about ten children or their caregivers might get polio from the oral vaccine...but they consider these human sacrifices acceptable for the greater public health goal of preventing polio outbreaks."

I am sure if polio has made a comeback in these places, the CDC would put it on the news immediately, don't you?

But polio used to be a live vaccine, and the vaccine they give nowadays is inactivated, right? There's no way to get polio from the vaccine anymore.

There is no way to get polio from the vax currently in use in the US- correct.

But the live vax is in use in other countries.

Malaria's a little different cuz it's not contagious. You only get it from mosquitoes. So no risk here unless you're going somewhere else- but that's why htey have people vax b4 traveling to africa and stuff.

But I'm curious about other countries tha thave done away w/ the polio vax. Personally it's not an illness that I worry about.

ok, who else knows about the polio-DDT link? Someone posted a link on here and I'm completely shocked. Not surprising, really, thinking about how people are completely oblivious of how their environment affects their health, but GEEZ! Now I'm even more weirded out about the vaccine.

I know about it.
