Forays into baby clothes...

I love to sew, although I'm not super good at it. I mainly embroider (OK, that's not really sewing) and mend and have recently started making cloth toys / pillows, working on a quilt, etc. I sew by hand not machine, if that matters.

Anyway, I would love to copy some of the cutey clothes designs they have at the mall stores. My daughter just had a growth spurt and needs a new spring wardrobe anyway. But those little T-shirts with cute logos on the front cost like 8-10$ a pop even at Target. I was thinking to get some plain white shirts and stitch a design on the front. But then I was thinking, why not make the whole shirt/skirt/whatever from regular old fabric? I have tons of fabric lying around.

My question is... would it be cost effective? Most of the baby clothes I see is made of this stretchy kind of material that doesn't shrink and is easy to launder. Would clothes I made by hand become stained in a sitting and unable to wash? My kids are super strainers. Also, how would I go about making things like those stretchy necks that aren't quite elastic? I know NOTHING about sewing clothes for kids. (Or adults, for that matter. But baby clothes are made so specifically stretchy that I don't know if it would make sense to try to make them from scratch. Should I stick to getting plain clothes and embellishing them myself?

I can't run to the library any time soon and don't have money for Amazon so I'm at you guys' mercy.

TIA!

If you make an envelope neck or a crossover type front you don't need much stretch - old t shirts work really well. Here's a link to give you some ideas.

Are your babes messy dribblers or pukers? If they are you could start by making some bibs. There are loads of free patterns online which you can make from almost anything. I do mine with old towel on one side and fleece on the other. Towel and cotton is is good too. I use this pattern version A (large) without the pocket for my 2yo and it has great shoulder coverage which other bibs don't!

You know, I think that's a great idea! My "baby" is actually turning one year old (gasp!) but I *love* those shirts that tie over the front. They kind of remind me of Asian clothing. I got some cute fabric today at the store. It's not specifically baby clothing material, but it was cute and on sale, so I'm sure I can experiment with it. Thanks for the good idea!
