ok mamas and papas, in the US there are only 24 states where CPMs (certified professional midwives) are legal (so far, i think there are some states where legislation is being worked out). there is a campaign out there called "the big push for midwives" to try and get CPMs recognized/legal in all of the US, and on a federal level in the new healthcare reform. i know there are many of us here who are passionate about birthing options, and this recognition could provide HUGE options to all women in the country, including making homebirth/midiwfery care covered under medicaid (only 3 states cover homebirth under medicaid right now NM, FL, and WA, i believe) and other insurances. i'm not saying everyone should have home births, but it should be accessible to those who want them, and in 26 states, women can't have a CPM attended home birth (i may be worng on that number, but that was the alst i heard). I'm studying to be a CPM and believe my education should qualify me to be able to provide out of hospital birthing options to women in ANY state i choose to live. here's what anyone who's interested in helping this cause can do:
visit http://www.thebigpushformidwives.org and read about it, or go straight to the whitehouse and post a small blurb of a request like:
"Please be sure to include Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), who specialize in providing out-of-hospital maternity care, in federal healthcare reform."
you can go to
http://change.gov/page/s/healthcare
or http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
and post that little sentence. it does ask for name and email and zip code, but i think that's the only required info.
anyways, i just thought i'd post this everywhere i could to help increase the chances of CPMs being recognized on a federal level.
