I just thought I'd let you guys know about something that happened at the hospital at my first's birth, fyi. We requested to delay cord cutting and clamping until pulsation stopped. They were unfamiliar with doing this, but agreed. The doctor said she still needed to get the cord blood sample, and she could do that with it intact. She put the syringe in to collect it, and blood spurted all over her and everywhere. They immediately clamped and cut the cord to stop the bleeding. It seems that no, you can NOT collect a blood sample from an intact pulsing cord. They can try and get it after delayed clamping and cutting, or from the fetal side of the placenta. So if your doctor doesn't know and tries to do it, refuse or you'll get a mess and early clamping anyway.
