Mucous-y, blood-streaked bowel movements, please help

I’m so frustrated. We’ve been doing this allergy thing since February last year. Yet I still feel like I’m in the same place I was last January.

Carter is 14.5 months old. He had green, mucous-y, blood-streaked poop today.

As a newborn, he spit up copiously. He gained well (from the 50 percentile at birth to the 95 percentile at 2 weeks) and was very content. I was told that the spitting up was simply a “laundry problem.” When he was approximately 6 weeks old, he started having green, mucous poop. I began block feeding, and the symptoms became slightly less intense.

Then, at around 10 weeks old, he started having blood in his bowel movements, occasionally. The pediatrician suggest a dairy allergy. I cut dairy out of my diet. The spitting up slowed down considerably.

However, a month later, he had another bloody bowel movement. The pediatrician suggested a soy allergy. I cut soy out of my diet.

Carter would go for weeks without symptoms, and then have mucous and/or blood in his bowel movements, again. We were eating out a considerable amount, as we had just purchased a new house and were renovating the kitchen. I always attributed the blood to accidental exposure due to eating out.

When Carter was 9 months old, I reintroduced dairy with no noticeable symptoms. When he was 11 months old, I began eating soy again with no noticeable symptoms.

Carter recently (in the last 2-3 months) has developed eczema all over his trunk and thighs. In December, the pediatrician offered an Immunocap test, and I accepted. His levels were all normal.

He has also had chronic diarrhea, that I’ve been attributing to other things, recently. I was on antibiotics for a bacterial infection, then he was, then I was again, because I had my wisdom teeth out, and there was an obvious correlation. However, while the diarrhea has slowed down, it has not stopped.

I’ve cut dairy and soy out of my diet again.

He eats very little in terms of solid foods. Today he ate: 3 bites of rice pudding made with coconut milk, one teeny broccoli floret, and a bite of pear (that I think he spit out, and the dog got). He is breastfed on demand, and has water available to him (if he wants it, it is mostly to experiment with) in a sippy cup. I tend to offer the breast a lot, because he would go without if I didn’t. He also has access throughout the night, and generally takes full advantage of it!

He is somewhere around 30lbs, so still gaining really well, though leveling off a bit. He also just started walking at the beginning of the month. Since 2 weeks, he has been in the 95 percentile or above for his weight).

Where do I go next? Do I need to cut more out of my diet? Could it be something else that is not allergy related? I am literally distraught. I think about how he must feel, and just get so upset. I can’t stand to think about how he must feel.

I didn't want to read and not offer a Your thread title caught my eye because we have been fighting the bloody poop monster for a few months now and although the blood is gone (and the eczema, too), his poops are still green and mucousy and I am at a loss for what to try to cut out next. Wheat, I guess.

I hope the experienced mamas here will have some advice for you...hang in there, you are doing a great job

My guess is that he did not outgrow the soy and dairy allergy; the symptoms just changed from bowel issues to skin issues. This is very common.

Also, you probably consumed soy and dairy if you were eating out a lot. Most restaurants have lots of hidden ingredients, trace amounts and cross-contamination unless you got a specialized meal from a conscientious restaurant (like Outback).

It's possible he has another allergy, especially if he never got to baseline. I would start an elimination diet and food journal. Particularly, I'd look at wheat/gluten, eggs, and corn in your diet. Check out the resources sticky above for how to do an ED.

Good luck and welcome!

I cut out wheat a week ago today. By Friday, his eczema was completely GONE.

Granted, it has been 3 weeks since re-eliminating soy and dairy, so that could be contributing. Additionally, his bowel movements were more solid and less frequent (once a day, down from every single diaper change).

I'm trying not to be too excited, but it seems like we're finally making progress.

He has had a couple of more liquid-y bowel movements, and had two today, but he's got a cold and is incredibly mucous-y, so that could be a factor.

Thanks for bluepetals and Chinese Pistache your suggestions and support! It means a lot.

When my son had similar issues I had to eliminate dairy, soy, eggs and nuts. I didn't try wheat but that is a possibility as well. I hope things improve!
