Pirates of the Carribean - Page 2

I got the DVD for xmas from dh. Watched it yesterday with the commentary. (BTW, it was Keith Richards, kama.)

The screenwriters said that Jack Sparrow and Barbosa were 2 sides of the same coin, the light and dark aspects of the trickster god. Since I am interested in mythology, I found this interesting.

How funny to find this thread at the top, since we rented this movie to watch on new year's eve.

Honestly, I thought the plot was unbearably stupid and the historical innaccuracies drove me crazy. (Such as the opening scene, the girl Elizabeth tells boy Will, "It'll be OK." HELLO! "OK" is NOT an eighteenth century expression.

But cranky ranting aside, I did think it was entertaining. I was prepared to drool over Orlando Bloom, but his character was kind of dull, I thought. Johnny Depp, OTOH--I couldn't keep my eyes off him. Did anyone else think he came across as really gay? Like the scene where's he's piloting the ship in a storm. Every time he opened his little compass, he looked like a lady checking her lipstick in a compact.

I didn't like Elizabeth. Feisty girl in corsets--it's been done too many times.

The OK bothered me too. It wouldn't have been much trouble to have her say "all right" instead.

One of the things the screenwriters said tho, was they were not making a movie about real pirates. They were making a pirate movie. That is, with the conventions of pirate movies of the past. That pirates could even be good guys--nope they were criminals, rapists and robbers. That they buried their treasure--nope, they spent it like water on whores and liquor (altho these guys had a reason to bury theirs). That people walked the plank even--didn't happen.

So perhaps the "OK" was a nudge nudge, this is a pirate movie, not a movie about pirates. I be thinkin.'

question that has been bothering me...

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
So at the end Jack cuts his hand, tosses the coin to Will, then Will cuts his hand, and drops it in the chest with the others. Why did Jack cut his hand too?

I like the movie a lot, thought it was funnier the 2nd time.

Orlando... :swoon

because when he took the coin out of the chest, he shared the curse with them. He needed to give his blood too to break the curse.

I usually hate movies like this, but I actually liked this one a lot.

I would love to have a family-friendly list of these if you have any on the top of your head - my daughter loved the "pirate princess" and I would like to show her more examples of girls kicking butt rather than waiting for Mr. Charming to show up!

Let me think and get back to you, Victorian, because now, off the top of my head, I'm drawing a blank.:LOL

Can anyone help me out? Who played Captain Barboza? His voice was so familiar to me, but I can't place where I've seen/heard him before. I'm thinking a "Father Ted" episode, but I'm not sure.

I agree that the movie was funnier the second time around.

Barbosa was played by the very talented Geoffrey Rush I don't think he's done Father Ted but I may be wrong. He was in Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth. Also he was the voice of Nigel in Finding Nemo which may account for the familiar voice! LOL
