Knitting Kid's Socks

Well, my kids have decided that what they really want me to knit for them is socks. I told them I thought socks were too hard for me but they insisted that "socks are small and I should be able to do a pair in a day!" I'm glad someone has so much confidence in my abilities (or lack thereof). I will probably ask on Rav eventually, but I wanted your input first. Especially if I'm going to splurge and buy a pattern, I need to know: what is a great pattern for kids socks? Bonus if it can be adjusted to fit a toddler size 8 foot to a kid's size 13.

I'm using this pattern to knit socks for my three year old right now. I knit some for myself off this pattern and they turned out great!

I was given a ball of sock yarn and some needles for Chirstmas. I now have 1 and a 1/2 socks. It's not something I would have picked for a project, socks sounded to hard for me but is has been fun.

The pattern I have is a free one from the yarn company which has children's and adults sizes. They had the leaflets in store.

I've been on the lookout for a pattern for toddler socks, too. I've found a few, but I'm also interested in hearing people's personal experiences with knitting patterns. I've knit a few projects where the patterns don't work out so well and it can be frustrating, especially since I'm such a painfully slow knitter.

I'll be watching this thread.

I have a Knitting Pure and Simple Pattern that is Sm, Med, Lg for toddler shoe size 4-8, childrens shoe size 9-13, and children shoe size 1-5... I have just made some of the toddler size and it is easy. They were a little big for my three year old's feet but I think if I dropped a needle size it would work. I used fingering weight yarn. He wears an 8 shoe.

the pattern is #245 on their website.

Kabes-The new Pins and Needles shop in Ruckersville has this pattern printed for sale. I think you are near that area?

FWIW, I also just made a pair of these and noted that the number of stitches and pattern divisions are exactly the same for the toddler size socks from the other pattern, so I made a mini one with smaller needles (US 2) and sock yarn and it worked for toddler size 8.

Then you don't have to buy a pattern.

I'm a big fan of the book Sensational Knitted Socks--each pattern is based on your gauge and the recipient's actual foot measurements, so you can pretty much make any size you want, from toddler through adult.

Youhave a great memory! Yes, I am near Ruckersville. I actually had to drive through tonight but couldn't stop (DH's van broke down and I was going to retreive him.). Since we're down to one car who knows when I'll get back that way. That is exactly what I need thought- another yarn/knitting store to stalk (dripping with sarcasm). The link looks like a good start I only have size threes but they are sure to fit someone since there are six different size feet here. Thanks for the help!

I think I'll put the Sensational Sock book on my "wanted list". The other pattern that was linked to helps you customize your sock size too; I'll probably do those after I do the other pair.

Thanks everyone! (More suggestions are welcome and appreciated if anyone has something else to add.)

I was going to say the same thing. She has several different levels of "difficulty" and has a "beginner" sock (a mini sock, really) for you to try your hand at all of the techniques before you move on to a full, actually wearable, sock. I like the book and the way it's set up...with the patterns she has, really, I will never need another pattern, because with the charts she provides, and the multiple styles and options, you can pretty much make anything.

That's not to say I WON'T ever get another pattern...that would be silly.
