Working outside the home and homeschooling?

Hi there! I've noticed on a few threads some people have mentioned that they WOH and homeschool. Sorry to be thick but how is this possible? Are you working only evenings etc?

I would be fascinated to know how you all work your schedules. I may well have a good career opportunity coming up next year that would be hard to turn down but am still interested in the possibility of homeschooling.

I'd love to hear your stories if you would care to share

I work 24-32 hours a week out of the home. I work 12 hour shifts every fri and sat and 8 hours every other sunday. Dh works the other days and we both take Mondays off to take the kids to classes individually. So far we are very relaxed (ds is 5.5) and it has worked pretty well. He mostly learns through daily life, and we have lots of stuff that we do when he asks to. Dh reads him story of the world at bedtime (again when he wants to). When the kids get older, we have talked about dividing up subjects based on what we are stronger in. We will see how it works year to year.

For us, it works well, since dh is involved and very into homeschooling. And, because we don't have to use daycare. I am not sure how it would work if we couldn't trade shifts like we do now. Good luck, in the right situation, it can definitely work fine

I work evenings and Saturdays totalling 20 hrs/week. My work schedule is perfect for our busy lives.

I'll be working 2-3 days a week, but plan on HSing on the weekends as well as my days home so dh can be involved more than just in the evenings. We're hoping to find some sort of part time "school" for dd to go to on my work days to have fun playing. Maybe a Montessori type or something. We'll see.

I'm an RN and right now I work ft nights (40 hrs a week), but I do work some days (all last week and this week I work days--when I work days the girls go over to my dads house or something like that). Nights work better for my family right now though. I usually work from 11pm-7am five nights a week. I love it! I've also worked ft with 12 hr shifts three days a week, that works well too.

My kids are a bit older so I can sleep until about 2pm and then get up and we have all afternoon/evening off together (my kids keep a later schedule as well, going to sleep around midnight waking up later, so it works well for us. They are a bit older so they take care of themselves for a couple hours while Im still sleeping).

We are very laid back hs'ers and that is key for me. We do things like 4H, karate, ballet, swimming, ymca, community garden all in the evening and also on my days off. My husband is a police officer and he helps out a lot as well.

We haven't formally started yet (DS is 20 months) but if all goes well, we'll be able to keep our same schedules, I work 32 hours from 8-2:30pm, my DH works from 8pm to 1 or 2 am, which leaves us plenty of time to school (or unschool, whichever we do) at home.
