Seed allergy lists

I know there are a couple of people avoiding seeds on here. I also know I've seen a few folks posting looking for info on seed allergies and not getting a lot of responses. The information is out there, but it's taken me hours to find. I thought I'd post this list I've compiled from a variety of sources about things to avoid with sesame and some other seed allergies

Likely to cross-react
sesame seed
poppy seed
flax seed
sunflower
buckwheat
mustard seed
pine nuts
rye (depended on the sites)

Possible to cross-react
peanut
legumes
tree nuts
hazelnuts
kiwi
spices

Spices that may cross-react
mustard seed
coriander seed
caraway seed
fennel seed
paprika
saffron
rarely - onion, garlic and chives

Some similarities that can rarely cause a reaction
carrot
shiso/perilla

Please feel free to add and I hope this might help some others out there!

Does that mean that something like pumpkin seeds are not especially likely to be problematic for those with other seed allergies? Besides whatever the cross-contamination issues that may exist, of course.

As far as I could understand, they shouldn't be. I looked really hard to find out if squash/pumpkin seeds would be an issue and as best as I could tell, they are botanically dissimilar enough that the plants themselves shouldn't cause a problem. I also was trying to determine whether I could go back to hemp (which I'd never noticed a clear reaction to) and it looked like unless he's got a separate allergy to it, I should be able to.

Interesting. We're avoiding all nuts and seeds, but buckwheat is the only 'grain' that DD can tolerate.

Interesting. Thanks for putting that together. DD also reacts to seeds, though we haven't given her any in 2 yrs, so it's hard to know if she still does. At that time, however she reacted to sesame, sunflower, flax and coconut. She does eat buckwheat, at least once a week, and I haven't noticed a reaction, but she does sometimes have rougher textured skin than others, so who knows if that might be a mild trigger.

She tolerates pumpkin seeds (ones we harvest and roast ourselves), and seems fine with all of the other groups you listed.

Have you found out anything about flaxseed?

can you be allergic to pumpkin seeds but not pumpkin itself?? Probably not, but just a question from the back of my mind....

That kind of thinking was what prompted my search. He's done just fine with several hard winter squashes and I really hated tossing the seeds in the compost instead of roasting them like we used to. I didn't really get a good answer though.

Oops, flaxseed was on the lists as well, I just left it off accidentally. Fixed it now...
