Another question re:dpns

When you knit with dpns does your object form inside out? Or am I holding the needles wrong? I see how if I held the work away from my body instead of between my hands and my body I could make the work form right side out, but does it matter? How do you do it?

Ummmmm. I'm by NO means an expert...but I make a circle/sqaure/triangle with the needles, and then knit from the OUTSIDE of the project, with the yarn coming from over the top. Soooo, I just made my sister a hat, and I knitted every single stitch...and it made it right side out. Hope that helps. What made it work for me was to go to google "how to use double pointed needles" and found a youtube tutorial or three. It always works best to find a set of hands which knits just like yours (I hold the yarn in my left hand), to give you the best visual of what your hands should be doing.

Yep, I knit with the yarn in my left hand and knit every stitch and formed it inside out. I can see know how to do it the right side out. I don't think it really matters when you're working something from small to big (toe up, or top of the hat down) but I imagine if I was knitting socks from the top down and I followed the directions for seaming that I would end up with the seam on the wrong side of the sock. Which is why I want to get it figured out before I start attempting socks.

you should be working with the needles closes to your body, right side out. Otherwise, when you're following patterns, you'll get all sorts of confused, LOL!

Luckily, right now I'm working on a pattern of my own design so there really isn't anything to screw up. I'll try to remedy my malfunction before I cast on the socks I want to try or I'm sure I"ll make a big mess of it.

Mine is always inside out. I just can't seem to comfortably hold the needles to get it right side out.

Anyway I just finished my first pair of socks last night, I just turned them right side out when I had to graft the toes. I never thought about it being a problem.

It really doesn't matter until you get to the shaping of something like a hat or socks, afaik. Some people actually prefer to work inside out because it keeps the right side cleaner while you're knitting, and it also tends to keep floats a little looser if you're doing stranded colorwork. I have done it for stranding on circs, but I find it awkward on dpns. I keep stabbing myself in the palm if I work inside out.

But if you want to "fix" the project you're working on now, just take the knitting and stick it through the center of the needles to pull it right-side out. Then, in the future, get ready to knit in the round, but before you actually start, put the needles (still in the same arrangement) flat on a table in front of you. Is the starting place at the 12 o'clock position (furthest from you) or 6 o'clock (nearest to you)? You want it at 6 o'clock. If it's at 12, flip the whole arrangement over.
