What Supplies?

Hi,
My mother inlaw is great at sewing and is willing to try to make diapers for me. I'm interested in her making kissaluvs style diapers, all in ones, pockets, wraps and fitteds. I want newborn/infant sizes and sizes to fit 22lb+ babe. What can she use to make the diapers? Does she have to buy specialty fabrics online? Can she just use fabrics that would be available at Joannes? If I buy her supplies online and send them to her, what should I buy? How much should I buy? and where should I buy it from?
Also, which patterns should I give her?
I look forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks
Rebecca

If I remember correctly, ZanyZebra has a list of patterns (there's a lot out there!), some free, some not free.

There are also a ton of fabric choices!

For covers, AIO or pockets you will probably want PUL. That's the waterproof outer part. The inner layer of the pocket/AIO is usually microfleece (sometimes suedecloth). For the soaker part (the absorbant part), you can use recycled materials, like old towels, t-shirts, flannel, etc. or buy fabric. Microfiber is very absorbant, but is not a natural fiber. Sometimes you can find that at regular stores with their car cleaning supplies. Cotton, bamboo and hemp are also popular choices. For real, there's about a million options. I've bought almost everything online, including diaper quality velcro - called Aplix or Touch Tape. Wazoodle.com has a lot of options, and I also like kidsinthegarden.com, a really nice wahm, good to work with.

I'm sticking with generalities because it would take days to explain everything....Hopefully this helps a little. Let us know what your other questoins are!!!

She really wanted to be able to buy stuff at Joannes. If I just order some things and send them to her, what and how much?
If I wanted her to make 6 large aios, how much PUL, aplix/touchtape,elastic and what else?
I think she is trying to buy it herself so I won't have to spend money. But I think she would use the above mentioned items if I sent them to her.
Also, I read a Mama on diaperswappers made aios with fleece because the baby didn't use PULs. Could she make aios without shopping online or is it really impossible?
How about fitteds for newborns, does she still need the PUL or other specialty item?

Thanks for the reply,
Rebecca

There is a great list of suppliers for diaper making items in the stickies. I think a good pattern with good instructions is the best start. Most patterns come with fabric recommendations. There are also pre-cut ready to sew kits available online.
How nice of your MIL to sew for you and baby!
