Has anyone had this happen post c-section?

Ok, so apparently my recovery was going a little *too* easily. Yesterday, my OB's office sent me up to the ER because they thought I had a clot growing behind the incision. A 10 hour visit (5 in the waiting room... ) and a CT scan later, I find out that nope, no clot behind the incision. But there is something in the uterus still. Yeaaaaah, poor doctor--he told me and I freaked saying "you mean, like a scalpel or gauze or something?!" He laughed at me and I'm sure he thinks I watch too much ER. LOL! He said it was likely retained placenta or my uterus was full of blood that wasn't draining out. So, they get on the phone with my OB who insists that the placenta was removed whole, so it was likely blood, and that I need to come in Tuesday to see what to do about it.

Now, I thought I was getting off easily because I've had nothing more than spotting since the c-section. I thought that maybe he just cleaned everything out--it turns out that it's all still trapped up there. Um, so, what is that about? Is that normal? Is it ever going to come out? Do they have to go back in there? (um, yeah, freaking out because it's the weirdest thing I've ever heard of...)

Oh, and thanks to the catheder from the c-section, I also walked out with a prescription for Microbid due to a big ole UTI. Go figure--I frequently don't drink much at all, and have never had a UTI--now I'm extremely thirsty and drinking 2 liters a day and I get a UTI. Oy. And I also got a little stern warning from the doctor telling me to actually rest, and not just fake rest (I haven't been doing too much, but I have a split level ranch and have been going up and down stairs frequently since I got home Sunday, and made the mistake of putting Mia in a sling yesterday--ouch!).

So, this blood in the uterus thing--is that not a big deal? I'm hoping it's just one of those normal things that happens (I'm 9 days post c-section now if that helps any...)

um well maybe I'm crazy, but it sounds very concerning to me! retained placenta and blood can cause toxic shock syndrome or serious infection. I would call someone else if they know more about it and ask again. be sure ot go to the ER or doctor if you spike the slightest fever or get chills ect. don't wait until you're really sick ok?

there are things you can take for retained placenta (herbs) but I honestly don't know how that would work with this situation since it was a c/s. it may be n issue of the c/s management itself and not just the placenta.

I swear I am not an alarmist at all. usually I'm very laid bakc about this stuff. but to tell you that you have retained blood from a c/s they gave you and then put it off til Tuesday is crazy!

Are you still on the Abx? I agree w/ the PP, this is scary...didn't they see anything in the u/s? If not- counldn't they rule out retained plancenta?

I'm on the first day of the antibiotics for the UTI, no fever, no more chills (I had them yesterday, but it was probably UTI related).

The OB said that the placenta was out whole (I have a blood condition and he took the placenta so the hospital can do research with it). They did an abdominal CT that showed "something" in the uterus--the OB they consulted with before calling mine said it was likely either blood or placenta since the instruments & gauze and stuff were all accounted for and nothing like that showed up on the films.

ETA: If it helps any, my milk came in on day 3 and my supply is better this time than it was the first time I nursed a newborn...would that rule out retained placenta?

Yes, Allie that should rule out retained placenta. When the placenta detaches that causes prolactin to rise & signal milk production. I am thinking probably blood clot, made due to your disorder. How is your blood flow???
I meant to also ask, what prompted the visit in the first place? The UTI, or just a 1 week check up or????

My flow was next to nothing since the day of the c-section, and it's gone now. Whenever the nurses asked how the bleeding was, I told them it was just spotting, and they never seemed concerned about it....

Oh, and the OB's office sent me to the ER because I was having a lot of abdominal pressure/pain right above my bladder and some sharp pains in that area. They originally thought it was a clot behind my incision, so they wanted to rule that out. Boy, were we a little surprised that it wasn't behind the incision at all! Oy!

Ally I will send you a message via FB.

Retained placenta is a big deal. I think (I am no OB) that they would have to go in there and get it out.
I have had 3 c-sections and have bled for 8, 6 and 3 weeks afterwards. I have never heard of anyone not bleeding afterwards.

I pray everything turns out ok.

I forgot to come in here and update!

I had my followup appointment today with the OB and they did an ultrasound. The OB said he read the CT scan and the ultrasound and came to the conclusion that the techs that read the CT scan at first aren't that well versed in reading postpartum scans. Apparently what *was* in my uterus was normal postpartum blood that was working it's way out--no placenta and nothing huge that would cause a problem. This weekend, my bleeding got worse, but then tapered off after a couple days, so I think the OB was probably right.

So, whew! Apparently it's nothing too bad and the ER tech just scared the crud out of me for nothing. :

I really worry about ER docs a lot. They seem to be clueless, many times.
