So does the varacella vaccinations cause shingles? or is it the other way around?

So I talked to a nurse the other day...

She told me that not getting the chicken pox vaccination causes shingles later in life? Studies are showing this... when I said I thought it was the other way around, she said I was reading outdated material? She said the Measles are coming back in large outbreaks, and then when I finally said... I think all your telling me is nothing more than fear tactics, nor do I believe any of it... and what does this have to do with us anyway? My child is unfortunatly up to date on all of it... she said...

I have to tell everyone that calls in this... ???

So my question is... has anyone read any pro varicella vaccination stuff showing that not having it brings on shingles later in life... or is there no study, and the health dept. is giving out a study that never happened? As far as the Measles returning in large numbers... how large is large? As far as I have seen and studied, this large number is well... not anything that concerns me.

Chicken pox and measles have nothing to do with each other. They are two different infection and two different vaccines.

She was either totally misinformed or just plain making it up.

If a person never had cp, they can never get shingles any time in their life.

Once a person has cp, naturally or injected via vaccine, they store the cp virus in the nerve endings in the back of their neck.

Ideally we are supposed to be re-exposed to cp when our own kids get cp, and then when our grandchildren get it. This way we keep up the immunity.

The problem is that when we don't get re-exposed every so often, and suddenly in old age, when our immunity has waned and perhaps we are not as immunologically fit, then we can come down with shingles.

Actually when cp was a natural occurrence and everyone was exposed repeatedly, shingles was very rare.

Unfortunately since the cp vaccine was brought out, even kids get shingles.

She's full of it.

If you've had chickenpox OR the vax you can get shingles.

Studies have shown that shingles is hitting more and earlier due to the vax.

But never fear! They have a shingles vax now...

Thanks... Yeah I thought it strange... She brought up both vaccinations. Both prob. With not vaccinating on both. I just wrote that out kind of bad. Ran them together in my post. Thank you all for clearing up what I already thought. I was just surprised that they were taking reality and really turning it around. Perhaps I will send her a little more info. Thanks for the links too.
