I've been making mascara for about six months now, told my mom and aunt how to do it, and they really like it, too, so I thought I'd share here. It is sooo easy.
First, you will need a tube. The easiest is if you have a old clear mascara tube. Using a long skinny metal thing- like really small pliers or a crochet hook- pry the seal off the opening of the tube. Clean the tube, seal and brush very, very well with lots of warm water and a very mild, gentle soap (a la Dr. Bronner's). Rinse very well.
That is the hardest part.
Let the tube, seal and brush air dry.
Now, get some black (or brown, whatever you want) mineral eyeshadow/powder eyeliner (I love Everyday Minerals and it's like $3 for the black eyemakeup). Take a piece of paper and form a funnel (or if you have a tiny funnel, use that) at the mouth of the tube (which seems much bigger with the seal off) and pour in 1/4 to a 1/2 teaspoon of powder eyemakeup. (I never measure, I just eyeball it.) Now, take some clear aloe vera gel- straight from the plant is fine- and, using the brush, glob a bunch in the tube- as much as will fit. Use the brush to mix up the eyemakeup and the aloe.
Put the seal back on the tube.
Voila! You have mascara. It doesn't smear, but it will flake a little toward the end of the day. It doesn't thicken, but it lengthens nicely. It comes off with just a wet washcloth, no soap or makeup remover required. Since I started using this instead of storebought mascara, my eyelashes have gotten longer and curl more. That could be because I'm pregnant, but my mom and my aunt report that their eyelashes curl of their own accord now, too, so take this as you will.
HTH somebody.
