Update from Dermatologist Appointment

Well he has eczema. I said "Well what is causing it?" They say he has sensitive skin and thats his body. That he will outgrow it. Most kids have eczema.

:

They said bath/showers. Grease him up with Aquaphor or Vaseline. This will keep his skin moist and keep him from scratching.

They also said to do the bleach baths (1/4 C in bath full of water 1-2 times a week).

Desonide twice a day.

Hydroxyzine as needed if itchy still.

I got the feeling they were saying I didn't need an Allergist.

Well this is what I decided. I have an appointment with an Allergist at the Children's Hospital March 3rd. I am going to keep that appointment. Then if need be I will keep the Derm appointment at the Children's Hospital.

I decided I am not going to take him back to the local Allergist. I don't think I am going to take him back to the Doc yesterday. I would prefer to just switch him over to Children's.

That was EXACTLY my experience with a ped derm - at the Children's Hospital in our state capitol. Did you have to wait MONTHS for your appointment, too? Did they (we had TWO drs in the room) say things like, "If one thing doesn't work, try another," and "Some people are sensitive to some things, and other people are sensitive to other things."? Did you get a 10-minute lecture on the basic definition of eczema (as if I hadn't bothered to look up ANYthing in the months we waited for the appointment. DH said that if I'd introduced myself as "Dr. ASusan" it may have avoided some of that.)

The ONLY helpful bit of advice I received was to use a thick, cream-like lotion that comes in a tub (as opposed to a bottle) - like Eucerin or Cetaphil. (If you're going the non-natural route, which by that point, we were.)

THey were not willing to even have a conversation about allergic reactions. The nurse who did the intake had a brief convo with me about giving up dairy and wheat. I was referred to the Ped Allergist, in the same office. THAT appointment was 5 months later. (ALMOST as useless.)

I'm sorry you had that experience.

Well how did you know?

The hospital we went to yesterday is a very large teaching hospital in the MW.

What I did like was they gave me handouts with instructions on them. The Resident wrote done additional instructions. I did like that. Instead of getting out of there and going "Now what did they say?"

Funny story. I don't think the Resident is use to a room full of noisey children. She was trying to talk to me and the kids had had enough and were getting loud. She says "I wish it were quieter in here so we could talk." She also implied we might be happier over at the Children's hospital. But I had mentioned we are there alot because of my DD1.

Sorry to butt in -- I'm still a beginner, learning lots myself. Just wanted to say that an allergist recommended our DS (9 months) use Eucerin -- and DS broke out all over his body because of the lanolin, I believe. It's in so many of the lotions I found at stores. We now use Vanicream thanks to a suggestion here, and we found it at Walgreen's.

We didn't like our appointment anymore than it sounds like you did. Doing an elimination diet has helped a lot, but there's still the eczema and occassionally an awful breakout that keeps DS up every 30 minutes...and it takes 30 minutes-1hr to get over the itching before sleeping again...Anyway, best of luck to you. Hugs to you and your LO.
