I've found a few threads about some not using shampoo on their kids or maybe even the baking soda and acv rinse. What do you do however when they have food or other things stuck in their hair? Will the baking soda take it out? Also, is there a real need to use soap on the body? Or should I just look for a natural soap of some kind, and if so, what?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

We use my handmade bar soap about once a week on DS's skin and hair (work up a lather from the bar soap and clean his hair with it), he's bathing/showering almost every day but just in water with a hair rinse and combing. He has short hair so it's easy, and kids don't get all that oily.

I haven't gone no poo yet... but I have VERY thick hair so I've always rinsed it just with hot water most of the time and shampoo'd it once a week.
My oldest DD also has very thick hair... so I started doing the same with her - just using a little bit of baby shampoo on her once a week and she rinses it with water the rest of the time.
My 2 younger ones - 3 yr DD and almost 2 yr DS - take a bath together and I use a little baby wash on their hair once a week. I rinse their hair with warm water from the faucet daily to take care of dried food debris (they are both very messy eaters). If needed I have used a washcloth with warm water to wipe dried food bits out of their hair. I get it soaking wet and then wait a minute or 2 and it comes right out. I don't use soap on their bodies daily either. They like to play in the tub nightly before bed but I usually only bathe them with soap once or twice a week.

I don't use either on my kid. Her hair is "washed" with water and her body is generally only watered down - hand made soap if she's particulary dirty. Water just about does it all.

I don't use soap on my daughter but about once a week(maybe)I use baking soda and ACV on her hair because it helps with the tangles.

Son (10) is particularly messy, and the BS/vinegar seems to get everything out of his hair just fine.
