exciting hypnobirthing story!

Last night I had the most incredible discussion with my husband's grandmother. She is a very analytical, not very sentimental kind of lady, so to hear her talk about her birth experiences is a big deal. Also, she is a doctor ( well, retired now), so you can imagine I am not super confident about telling her our entire birth plan.
Anyhow, I was talkng to her about the progress of the pregnancy and one of the cool, progressive care programs that our military hospital has set up. before I know, she is telling me about she was hypnotized for my F-I-L's birth....this was in the 1950's.
Since it was her firs time doing it, she had no idea that it was out of teh ordinary. It just so happened hat the OB she was referred to had been experimenting with hypnotism, and he asked her if she would be willing to see how susceptible she was to it. Well, apparently, she was very susceptible, and they decided to have regular visits, with her husband ther( in the 50's !) to plan on using hypnotism at the birth.
My grandfather in law was still not allowed in at the birth, hospital policy back then, but he waited int eh waiting room. It wa typical to gas women at that point in time, but the doctor instructed the l/d nurse that grandmother wouldn't be needing anything. They even let her watch the deliery in a mirrow, and at one point, when she tore and was bleeding, the doctor told her " Eileen, I want you to stop that bleeding" she says she had no idea how it happened, but she remembers watching in the mirror and seeing the bleeding stop. She swears that she never felt anything more than the urge to have a bowel movement.
She actually walked out of the delivery room ( after getting her stitches) to tell my grandpa in law that they had a boy. Furthermore, she felt so fantastic and euphoric after the birth, that the nurses called her doctor because they thought she should be sedated- this was when women were treated like invalids at birth. All of the other women were laying on their backs in pain, while she gabbed on the phone p
What is so awesome about this story is that this lady is so analytical and skeptical, you know that she is telling the truth about the whole thing. She had no idea that this has become somewhat of a birthing movement, she was just sharing her experience.
If anything proves that hypnobirthing can work, this would be it )

That's a wonderful story and how great for her to have had such an amazing birth experience during a time when so many women were treated so badly.

My granny also had hypnosis in 1960 with her DD2 and said it was great but couldn't find anyone to do it for DD3. With her first she was given twilight and was paralyzed but still conscious and said it was horrible. I really need to call her and get the whole story since I'm also planning a hypnosis-aided birth and it would be nice to here her story..

Well I worked on hypnobirthign the last time, having no clue about Grandma's story ( she is not the type to share birth stories...), but I was overseas and I could not find an English speaking class...I also wasn't able to have DH work with me. Regardless, i did feel like I was much calmer, and I did have a super, super fast labor and delivery and I felt EXCELLENT as soon as she was out.
So I was def. planning on using it again, and this time, hopefully with better preparation. Due to my current situation though, I am going to have to look for a hypnobirthing Doula so that I can have someone to prepare with.

That's neat! I've used hypnosis with my last four babies.

WOW! Your grandmother-in-law had an AWESOME OB for the era! I've been reading a lot about the history of birth in a hospital and it is SO scary, to say the least. What that OB "let" her do was amazing for the time.

no kidding...

what was so especially awesome was that this OB was the one that suggested it. I think he had done some sidework in hypnosis, and just before having my grandmother as a patient- he had been advised of a patient who refused anesthesia for surgery. She came to him asking him if there was a way to perform hypnosis so that she could have the surgery ( at least this is how I understand what Grandma said), and the surgeon consented to do the surgery if they could PROVE that the hypnosis woul work. So he does his thing, and applies a nipple clamp to prove that she would stay okay during srgery ( do you know how weird it is to hear your grandmother say "nipple clamp?")
So he tells grandma of this story, and asks her if she would be willing to try. She said sure, and he asked if it would be okay to do a test to see how susceptible she was to the influence of hypnosis- apparently, she was very susceptible, and he considered her a great candidate.
I think that it goes to show how one person in a field can make a huge difference- sure, his approach didn't become mainstream right away ( and it still isn't) but people like him set the wheels in motion for women like us to get to make these choices and share what we know with other women- just like my Grandma)in-law) has been doing all of these years since her birth experience.
