Would you call this a fail?

We started trialing yams today for DD and me. We fed her around 1-2 oz of pureed yams about 8 hours ago. She just pooped (for the 3rd time today, which is a lot for her) and it was all pureed yams and some strands of green mucous. She has had small amounts of green mucous in her poop lately so that alone wouldn't lead me to think it was a fail yet, but I'm not sure about all the yams passing through. Would you call this a fail? Is it normal for all the food to pass through undigested for an 8 mo old?

By the way, I will post separately on this but the medical intuitive said sweet potatoes/yams were bad for us but DH insisted on going forward with the trial (we had already planned it).

Well, I was going to say that DD is 15 months and still passes a lot of food undigested (no molars yet), but then I re-read that it was pureed yams. So that does seem weird to me, that even pureed they would come out whole. Seems like they went through her digestive system too quickly, which would make me think that it is probably a fail.

Can't wait to hear the whole intuitive story!

I would think that taken separately... these symptoms do not in and of themselves scream failure. Undigested food in infant stools is normal. And I believe that sweet potatoes have a laxative effect, so extra stools could also be normal. What does your mama radar say? 8 hours is a pretty rapid transit time, so I would be watching very carefully for other reactions...

I think it is likely a fail, but I'm not absolutely positive. The yams looked exactly as they did going in. And there was nothing else in her diaper except the yams and mucous strands - no creamy poop, just yams. She is also not sleeping, but she's been doing that the past few days. I guess I will see how she is tonight but I'm leaning towards stopping the trial.

Bummer. Nothing but yams and mucous? Fail. Sorry mama. I second CS... can't wait to hear the psychic story!

That's how my ds is with sweet potatoes and yams. He does great with carrots, though.

So would you consider that a fail?

Yes, I consider it a fail. I tried and retried about 3 time, all with the same result. But since carrots give us nice firm poops, I know the mucus and undigested sweet potatoes can't be normal.

Thanks! I think I may trial carrots next.

Just fyi, I'd wait about a week before offering any more solids to give the gut inflammation a chance to die down.

Oh I will wait till things calm down. That's why we have so few foods - most things fail then we have to wait till the reaction subsides and hope a mysterious reaction doesn't pop up after that!
