handmade ideas for men

Thread Starter
I've decided that this year I'm going to try and make most of my gifts to loved ones handmade. I've already planned what I will make for my sons, niece and nephewsand Mum. However, it was my DH's birthday a few days ago and I really struggled to think of something I could make for him. He's not into wearing beanies, scarves or gloves either so I couldnt try and knit something even (just teaching myself how), besides its the middle of summer here in Australia!

So I was just wondering if anyone has any good ideas of handmade items for men I may use later in the year for DH and my Dad.

Thanks,
Mel

well, its not super homemade, nor super affordable (probably the most I've EVER spent on a pressie for BF lol,) but one year for christmas, I bought a pendleton wool blanket, and embroidered one corner to say (oh dear, I forget the exact words! lol) "To my dearest J, wrap yourself in this blanket and in my love, and let it warm your body, heart, and soul. Love forever, C" He loves it. But as I said, it was expensive (because pendleton is very expensive. but you might be able to find high quality wool blankets for less). I think homemade or home-altered blankets and/or quilts are always a good choice, but then, BF lives in Denver, and I like blankets. lol.

also, for handmade by someone else, you could try etsy.com

Well, I'm not sure what sort of crafting you do besides knitting, but here are some of the things I've made/plan to make for the men on my gift list:

sweaters
hat and scarf sets
slippers
hot/cold packs made with rice, flax or corn
hacky sack/bean bags
tote bag/book satchels
personalized page-a-day calendar (with all the family dates noted)
shaving soap/aftershave lotion

Boxers
PJ Pants
Food (I can never go wrong if I bake for DH!)

For Christmas I got my dh a coffee a month club from a small roaster (uber geek coffee on hyena cart). Homemade is great but also supporting others in homemade ventures is good too.
If you do a certain kind of craft but don't know how to do the one you want trades can sometimes be worked out.

Look to your guy's interests to come up with ideas. I've seen homemade lures for fishing, geekery related crafts (I knit dh dice bags with a Zelda theme a couple of years ago), a sports watching kit (his favorite snacks and things he likes to have around for watching sports like a fleece hat in his team's colors), etc

Some of these are repeats, but I've given:

- fleece hats/scarves
- rice bags
- spiced nuts
- soaps
- spice rubs for grilling meat
- candy -- peanut brittle, toffee
- limoncello and other homemade liqueurs (always a big hit)

I'm with scrapadoozer on this one: handmade pyjama pants in a nice, sexy fabric, like a silk ^_^ He may not get much wear out of them, but hey--it's a gift! The last time I made pj pants for my sweetie, his first reaction was, "YOU made these?" and confessions of going commando in them.

Just make sure that you're ready for another addition to your family after you make them, lol!
