Fluoride "Sinking In" through Gums

Does anyone have any information on this? I've read a couple of things in passing, but no real data. Can the fluoride in toothpaste pass through the gums and get into the bloodstream? Son is old enough not to swallow the toothpaste, but I'd like to know whether it's getting into his system in any other way. Thanks in advance!

teeth are not a closed system, so yes, of course, whatever we take in, at whatever point, will travel. i think babes gums are even more sensitive/porous, suceptible, than our hardened adult gummies. any ingested flouride needs to be carefully considered. having said this, i have been in a position recently to decide whether or no to allow our ped-dentist to band one of aidan's teeth using glass ionomer cement which has flouride as a naturally occuring ingredient...yeah, it soaks into his tooth, and no, it doesn't stop there. it's a hard hard hard decision.

best of luck!

Thank you, thank you! The websites are wonderful. I'm still poking around on them.

Have you decided about the glass ionomer cement yet?
