Family Counseling

Thread Starter
I think it would be helpful my family to get some support.
Any suggestions for finding a good, family counselor? I know DH will resist but I will go with the kids regardless. I just don't know where to start in terms of evaluating a counselor.

Perhaps try posting your question in Finding Your Tribe...that way you've got people who are in your area looking at your question who might know of a good counselor. Otherwise, I would suggest asking friends and family. Last resort...you might just have to try out a few until you find a good fit...

Try here:

If you have medical insurance that includes mental health, they might have a list of contracted providers, so you might check there first.

I don't know about specific people but I would try a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or a marriage/family counselor. Stay away from psychologists and psychiatrists unless you need medication. Someone who practices cognitive behavioral therapy would be a good, I think. Those are the people I've had the best experiences with.

You might start by contacting a university. The best family therapists that I have met teach part time in the evenings.

Leslie Potter is wonderful and she specializes in working with families with teens. If you are interested in learning more about her, pm me.

PS: As you will see from my sig, I think you who I am!

I second the idea of checking with a nearby university. Many have marriage and family counseling centers and the cost is often pretty reasonable. I have been doing this with my kids and it works out well ... they like the therapist we see because he is young-ish and they can relate to him.

My sister and her kids have used counseling services provided by their church, so that may be another avenue to explore.

Good luck.
