This issue is mentioned in the Support WAHM's thread, but it deserves its own thread. I apologize if one already exists, but I couldn't find any other.

Consumer Protection Agency's act to ban lead from all children's products includes books, which, at this point, includes libraries.

...the CPSC acknowledged that the current deadlines are unrealistic and potentially damaging...

“It is completely irresponsible and unacceptable for the CPSC to continue to leave this matter unresolved with the February 10th deadline drawing closer each day,” ALA President Jim Rettig said. ... we find it disappointing and shameful that a government agency would continue to leave this matter unsettled when clearly the outcome would virtually shut down our nation’s school and public libraries.”

From the sweeping language of the law, it appears Congress left them no choice. The Act covers any “consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age and younger.”

“Consider for a minute that a twelve-year-old is a junior high school student,” says Adler. “This is not somebody who is likely to be chewing or sucking on a book.”
This is incredible.
