Do you secretly read kids books? - Page 3

Not too often... I did re-read "Rembember Me" by Christopher Pike (which was my favorite book in HS) a while back and it was good but just not the same.

I actually would like to go back and read some of my Judy Blume. I thought it would be too lame. But you guys are inspiring me...

I do! My mom got rid of a lot of mine, so I have to start rebuying them (for the kids, of course!)

I just love a good book. The only twinge of guilt I feel is getting on the hold list for kids/ya books, because I know there are lots of kids waiting for them. (although, I don't know if I'd want my teenager reading the Twilight books, but anyway...)

My favorites...
Little House series
The Black Stallion series
Neil Gaiman (I loved the Graveyard book, and didn't even realize it was ya until long after I'd read it.)
The Secret Garden
Harry Potter
Twilight
Cynthia Rylant

Right now I'm into books by Scott Westerfeld. It's science fiction stuff.

No secret here either!

I often read what my kids are reading, plus I want to read all the "classics" that I never got a chance to read when I was actually a child.

Yup --- but not so secretly. Am waiting to read the newest "Ranger's Apprentice" book (more YA than kids' I guess) and have just bought a book that looks cute for my daughter, "Little Fur", about a half-troll half-elf girl who has to save seven ancient trees near her home. Sounds just up my alley. And I'm trying not to get too far ahead in Spiderwick (we read it at bedtime) because I just want to keep on reading after my daughter goes to bed.

Same here. Adult books often are too full of tragedy and violence.

If you love children's books, try Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes. Yes, there is a tragedy, but not among the main characters, and I think he does an amazing job of telling a story from an adolescent girl's point of view.

It's funny b/c my dd picks out some really good books at school and brings them home to read. We usually read them together before she goes to bed and when she falls asleep, I just keep reading. When my dd got her report card, one of the comments the teacher made was that during their independent reading, my dd picks out really interesting books.

One of my friends and I were talking about reading Christopher Pike in high school, and it made me tempted to check out one or two from the library. But I actually got a little nervous, like I'm too old for them! This thread has inspired me to go back to my teenage/childhood favorites. I also loved Ramona, Judy Blume, and Roald Dahl.

My brother and I were huge Christopher Pike fans when we were kids, and that was my favorite of his books, too. But you're right; his stuff doesn't seem as revolutionary as an adult. I'll look forward to my kids being old enough to read it, though.

DH laughs every time I mention Christopher Pike... apparently that was the name of the first Starship Enterprise captain or something? Who we never meet but who figures into Star Trek legend?

Anyway, I love YA books and read them not-at-all-secretly. When I was teaching eighth grade (a few years ago), I started every class with a book review, which really kept me on my toes as far as reading new stuff I could recommend. Once I started reading, I found some really quality stories out there and I still keep up with my YA reading. My favorite authors are Chris Crutcher, Joan Bauer, Sarah Dessen, and Janet Tashjian. All write really complex characters that I found really appealing.

All the time!! (not-so-secretly) Sometimes for nostalgia (The Giver, Ramona!), sometimes for personal education (why was I the only kid who did not read Bridge to Terabithia??), sometimes for professional reasons (I read what my students are reading, or so I can make some good reccommendations, like Scott Westerfield).

I also have a set of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys that were my dad's that used to scare the pj's right off of me as a kid that I love to read.

Now if only I had kept those scary books by Lois Duncan I read in 6th grade....

No reason to read them secretly, I love children's and Young Adult books.

Same here. Though I do *claim* to be collecting all the old Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys books for my daughter (currently seven months old). I bought the entire Box Car Children series for my nephew when he was six, with the promise that he would save them for Auntie if he ever outgrew them.

With 5 children I am reading children's books on a regular basis, but yeah I prefer them. I can't get into adult fiction. It really just drives me nuts. All my adult books are NF. But we love to read HP, Narnia, The Wilderking Trilogy, etc... out loud with the whole family.

I could totally go for some BSC, especially those bigger adventure specials. I am also in the market for a copy of the SVT Christmas book where they got into a fight and then got transferred through these dolls to some fantasy world... I don't remember the title but it was my favorite.

I did once use my status as a parent to go see my favorite cartoon, Recess, when they had the movie out at the theater.

I've always loved kids books. Even before I had a child, I would read/collect them. I don't feel that it needs to be a secret. I like what I like.

Oh my gosh yes! I still read The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High books. It reminds me so much of growing up!

Oh yeah I also read the Romana Series, The Boxcar Children and Anne of Green Gables!
