i was talking to my friend the other day about how i'm excited to not circ this baby should it be a boy, and she is (was) against it too, even though she did cut her son because of her husband anyway back to the point she works in a hospital now and she said that since she has seen one done she isnt really against it anymore she said the babies really dont cry and it doesnt seem that bad, she said its nothing like the videos she has seen on the net i said its not about the procedure only its also about the simple fact that it DOESNT NEED TO BE DONE and she said eh, and left it at that. I wish I could of said more in the moment but I was just to shocked I pray she has only girls from now on, so she can't circ them

You should ask her whether she has studied any of the functions of the foreskin. Maybe you can guide her through some material about how important the foreskin is.

Also you might want to tell her that MANY babies go into shock as a protective mechanism from the pain. There is still significant pain for weeks following the operation.

Although I don't think the pain or lack there of should be a reason to or not to circumcise, I am reminded of something I read recently:

Quote:
My first son was circ'd because... well I didn't know any better and it was 'the thing' to do. The hospital wouldn't do my 2nd sons. The pedi wouldn't do it because he was a big baby (something about more acute pain sensation). Ultimately we ended up at a pedi urologist who said... The child doesn't quit crying because they're taking a nap. They quit crying because they have passed out from the pain. That along with it being a largly cosmetic procedure was not enough for me to get it done. So #2 is intact. He's almost 3 now and has never had an issue with it.

That's scary!

When I was 17 I volunteered with the neonates in a hospital as part of a health occupations class. This was just before they started just sticking a thing (don't know what it's called) on the penis to cut it. I helped a nurse get the gingerbread tray out. It looked like a mold for a gingerbread boy. It had velcro straps on it. She said the baby would cry b/c it didn't like to be tied down.

Well, this was an intern or something who hadn't done any or many circs. It was bloody and the baby sounded to me like it was hurting.

They may think they're being more humane now, but mutilation is mutilation no matter how it is done. If I were Jewish, it might be different - but even they, I understand, wait 8 days and then give the baby a drop of wine.

I see no reason to slice a piece of skin off a newborn. They need love and cuddling not pain. Too much that is painful is done to newborns as it is (but those topics belong in different forums). Perhaps what she saw was a drugged baby (from its mother being drugged) and that's why it didn't make a fuss? Or she wasn't sensitive to the babe?

She might be just trying to justify the circumcision of her first son. Also some babies react differently to this procedure. Some exhibit signs of pain; others don't, which does not mean that the pain is not there. Pain is very difficult to measure empirically; nevertheless this does not mean that we should ignore it. There is tons of research and posts on this. I suggest you check them out. In any case, even if circumcision was a painless, clean surgery, which it's not, it's still could not be ethically justified in my opinion.
