Toddlers and Tiaras - Ugh!

Okay, I am only 20 minutes into this show and am disgusted (and totally enterained because this whole pageant thing is just so beyond my understanding!) by these parents. OMG, one mother says "they do tan" and then show this 6 yo getting a spray-on tan for "enhancement." Not to mention the other families featured.

yuck. I read about it premiering in the paper today. I think I'll stick to Ace of Cakes

And the moms performing. I just don't know what to say but perhaps there is a cetain age where you should no longer perform your baton routine on stage.

I absolutely love reality shows but there is no way I will watch this crap! It is very sad that parents do this to their kids!

I watched it because I was curious but it just made me sick- I think I threw up a little in my mouth at some of these parents. And, ITA agree about the mom's baton routine.

Hi Mamas,
I watched it last night for the train wreck factor. I laughed out loud at the pagent father who cried when his daughter didn't win. What kind of behavior is that?
I probably won't watch it again, bc it gave me nightmares last night.

He needed to "explain" to her why she didn't win. Um. She didn't look like she even cared.

yes exactly! she is a 2 yr old and she won a huge trophy! she was thrilled. what a jerk that guy was. maybe he should come out of the closet and just enter himself in a freakin pageant! i felt bad for his wife and kid, they obviously were just trying so hard to please him.

oh and the black lady who said she wanted to win, but if not her she would want her daughter to win (and she actually did)! can you imagine hoping to beat your own 11 yr old???!!????!!!!

baffling if you ask me :

Agree! Also did you notice that at some point one of the parents referred to it being a hard day not just because of the pageant but because they had "the boy" with them. Uh, Hello! Do you mean YOUR SON?

Father said at the end of the show that they had three kids. The other two were boys and it doesn't seem like they are that important in the family.

IMO the show was entertaining in the fact that it is really unbelievable to me that people put their kids through all this but I won't be watching it again.

I have HUGE issues with children's pageants. I think it teaches young girls that looks and talents are what are most important in getting ahead in life. yuck!!!!!

When I see little girls with wigs on and are getting spray tanned, I have to agree with you.

ah, but did you catch the Pageant Director stating that they do not want the girls tanned. She also said they do not want the girls in skimpy bikinis, they want 1 pieces, that wearing a 2 piece could hurt their scores. I don't know if tanning would, but it sounded like it would count against them too.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, this is based on 1 event. The family could be just as over-involved in their sons activities too.

Yes the 2yo didn't care.

I watched a few episodes of this last season because my mom put me and my sister in pageants when we were very young. I hated it. It made me miserable. My sister loved it. We weren't in glitz pageants but did have to sleep in sponge rollers and wear makeup.

I would never subject my girls to that kind of competition. Getting dressed up is one thing, but especially glitz pageants are going to far. I can see the misery on some of those girls faces and it brings back memories. I think I still have issues with myself from having been in the pageants. Don't think my sister was affected as much though. So, it is possible to be individual to the child.

I DVRd this and just starting watching. WOW is all I can say....though I give that one mother credit for having the balls to wear a bathing suit up against those skinny minnies, you could not pay me enough to EVER be in a bathing suit pagent. I thought it spoke volumes when the mother with the pagent dad kept telling the little girl to say " I love pagents....say it, say it." Ummmmm yeah, she probably does not even know what she is doing.

The issue I have with these is that they start these girls so young and some really don't seem to be that in to it, despite what her mother says. My feeling is that if my dd asked me to do a pagent I would probably let her, but not to the level that these women go to. There are some pagents that really do focus on academics and true talent and give scholarships, but those girls are old enough to understand and choose what they are doing.

: He was waaaaaay to into it for me.

That little girl could care less. I was surprised at the end that they had other children.

The baton twirling mom did have guts (but I would never do that). I thought the mom's participating was a bit strange.

I was kind of surprised that the sprayed on tan girl had won though. The swimsuit competition really disturbed me the way those little girls were sashaying across the stage.

I did not see the show, but the previews gave me the creeps.

But this reminds me, have any of you seen Little Miss Sunshine. Too funny! and at the end a "normal" little girl is in a pageant and it's hysterical!

I watched it last night and it was nauseating. Dh and I just gaped the whole time. One girl was "natural" and she looked pretty and age appropriate and had fun. Her mom was pretty relaxed about it. The other two moms though, were insecure ex pagent winners living vicariously through their kids.
The two year old screamed and whined the ENTIRE time. Her mom kept insisting that she loved doing pagents though!!! Then she was pissed that she didn't win first place.
The other child was glitzed, tanned, madeup and false eyelashed out to the max. She had a forced smile on her face that looked feral. The mom had a "coach" for her and everything. It just made me sad.

Ick, Ick, Ick!!!

The mother with the toddler bothered me the most. Here this kid is crying her eyes and and throwing tantrums and you spent $800 on a dress!! : There is something wrong with this person. And I doubt that she will stop when the child tells her no more, which should be the second she learns to talk! WOW!

I dvr'd this for this reason- I knew there would be a thread. I remember a doc on HBO about 10 years ago about pageants and it was sick then too.

Yeah, that little toddler, was just miserable throughout the whole thing. And then at the end the mother stated she should've gone to a ball game w/her husband instead. I think it was all about her. That little baby had no interest in that crap.
