I didn't think it was REPLACED, so much as there was aluminum in there, too, that then wasn't removed but people falsely believed them to be safe once the mercury was out...?

I thought so too. I wonder though if the levels of aluminum went up since they removed most of the mercury. Anyone has any links comparing amounts of aluminum before and after the mercury was out?

I'm not sure mercury and aluminum do the same things, so I don't think removing mercury would change the aluminum levels. My understanding is that mercury was used as a preservative, and that the aluminum is used as an adjuvant (neither in live virus vaccines, but in those, there is formaldehyde, right, to keep the viruses killed?)
We did speak to a vaccine researcher once who told us that aluminum never leaves the body, and that they're looking (at his company) for a process that doesn't involve aluminum. I say, go for it! It doesn't mean I'll sign up my kids for the shots, but if it really is better, who knows!

You might like to search the archives for aluminum - there are some good threads in there. But you are correct in that thimerosal & aluminum serve 2 completely different purposes in vaccines. Aluminum did not replace thimerosal, it's always been used as the adjuvant in vaccines that use one. Thimerosal is a preservative & aluminum is an adjuvant. In some vaccines thimerosal remains in "trace" amounts from production use, some vaccines still use it as a preservative & other vaccines may use things like antibiotic or 2-PE instead.

DR. Mendelsohn used to say that doctors never drop one drug/procedure/surgery without coming up with one even more dangerous.
When prenatal x-rays were declared verboten, ultrasound was ready;
When tonsilectomies were declared useless, eartubes were done by the same specialty;
When miltown and valium were declared verboten, xanax and prozsac took the stage;
When forceps deliveries were declared too dangerous, caesareans became the desired method of delivery;
Aluminium has been in vaccines all along, however, and perform a different job than being a preservative. There are plenty of things in vaccines that are objectionable, including the concept itself, so I am not surprised.

Aluminum is the main reason I'm against vaccination. The math in Dr. Sears' book is off, but that's another rant... Either way, not all vaccines have an aluminum-free brand. I've seen people say here that they requested a specific brand and the doctor simply gave the vaccine, but didn't use the brand requested. The lowest amount of aluminum that would be given in just one vaccine is about 12 times the amount that was found to be toxic (taking the child's weight into consideration). I could never, in good conscience, let anyone inject that into my child. This is why when people bring up VADs with me, I'm unmoved. Because I honestly, personally can't compare any illness to allowing a stranger to inject poison, and so much of it, into my child. Aluminum is a neurotoxin like mercury. Even if every bit of mercury was removed, it makes no difference since the aluminum is still there.

The other confounding factor (looking at health at a population level) is that there were quite a few new vaccines coming on the market around the time the mercury was being phased out. Makes it hard to isolate what is causing what problem.
