Any tips or tricks for how to babywear in the cold? I'm soooo tired of the bundled coats and stuff. Too many layers. I end up just lugging my 21 mo on my hip.

What about a babywearing poncho? I know you can buy them, but here is a link for a no-sew one: http://magiccityslingers.wordpress.c...ece-poncho-25/

Its a free tutorial, so I hope its OK to post.

What are you doing now that is not working?

When my kids were smaller, I used a maternity coat. I would pre-tie a wrap on at home and then pop baby in and then button up the maternity coat over us both. Then when they got older, I would wear a short wrap or a ring sling over my coat (that's what we do now with my 22 month old). I find wearing the sling over my coat to be easier than holding with my hands, since I also have a 4 yr old I need to hold hands with, plus our bag, etc. So, having my 22 month old in a sling if even just to get into the store or wherever we are going helps a lot.

I exclusively babywear as a means of kidlet-transportation (no roads = no cars = no carseat) around town. Today it's -8 with 25mph winds, so he's only going out to go to/from the babysitter's house, which is right next door. However, if we have to take him out in weather, I put DS in his Moby (in a snowsuit, actually), facing inward, and then zip up my parka around him. We have infant snow goggles and I'm going to sew him a fleece facemask/balaclava so there will be no exposed skin, but until I get around to firing up the sewing machine, he gets a blanket draped over him. I should do that tonight... the sewing, that is.

It was easier with my old parka, which was ginormous, but it was ten years old and hopelessly ripped. We both fit inside the new one, but it's a tighter squeeze, at least until I lose the rest of this baby weight.

ETA: DS is 9 months and 21.5 pounds.

I don't know if it would be warm enough for where you are, but I've had a lot of success these days wearing dd on the outside of my winter coat, bundled in her snowsuit or a jacket, with the CatBird Baby fleece cover on top of the soft structured carrier to keep her lower body and legs warm. I also have a babywearing jacket, but when I'm alternating between carrying her and pushing her in the stroller, or don't want to stand around in the cold outside the car getting the jacket over both of us, it's handy to be able to wear her on the outside of my coat.

I tie a mei tai on under my coat. I use a wool Monkey Pocket on top of the mei tai. I keep DS's arms and hands tucked into the MT. If they get loose, I tuck them inside my coat. My coat stays unzipped and can snuggle around him a little as well, but he seems warm enough without it. My DS is 11 months 25 lbs.

Our Solutions

I have a Suse's Kinder-coat too. It was expensive, but works really well. I've also heard of moms just getting an old man's fleece at Goodwill and cutting a hole in the right spot.

I've also put baby in a bunting bag inside the sling - either a bunting with arms and a sack for a bottom, or an outright sleeping bag like this :

Depending on the carry, you can often use a smaller size than the baby really is since they're folded up.

I actually love babywearing in cold weather. It's much easier to tell if baby is a comfortable temperature. In the stroller a child doesn't have your body heat to help keep them warm, and it can be hard for you to gauge how baby is doing... often you stay warmer because you're exercising, baby gets cold much faster since they're sitting still.

I absolutely am in love with my Deluxe Suse's Kindercoat. I am a very poor single mom/college student but it was worth every penny. I live where it is always raining or snowing between October and April and could not survive without my Suse's Kindercoat. It is great for front or back carries and I can nurse in it too. The coat is very comfortable and can be work without the baby insert for just me. Although it hasn't been dry enough, it can be worn as just a raincoat/windbreaker or just a fleece coat. Go to www.suseskindercoat.com to check them out. I am not a big fan of telling people to buy things but this coat gets my recomendation 100%
I was: but now I am ith my Suse's Kindercoat
