Need help with dry skin

I am having a difficult time this winter with dry skin on DS (18mths old), myself and my husband. We have been using dr bronners lavendar bar soap and california baby for my son. Is there an alternative to this that will help moisterize our skin? I heard of oatmeal ground up but have no idea where to start.

Please help me!!

nak-
have you thought about forgoing the soap except for the nessecary areas or unless actually dirty with dirt?

hemp, jojoba, and coconut oils are all awsome for the skin. we apply the oil before we dry off, that way your skin can absorb the water and oil.

Haven't tried the just water until last night and tonight I used EVOO on DS (only oil I had on hand, blush). I will see how he does tomorrow. I hope this works since the poor thing has scratch marks all over his body from itching so bad

Where is the best bargain place to buy these oils?

My skin didn't fare too well with this stuff. I switched to Kiss My Face Olive oil soap and it's much better.

I've also used EVOO on my skin and love that. Just put some on while in the shower and rinse the residue. Makes the tub grungy so you have to clean more, but my skin likes it.

Allergies will dry you out something fierce too.

I use straight Aloe as a daily moisturizer. I have a plant growing in the bathroom (it grows like a weed and is hard to kill!) and I just tear off a bit and squeeze out the aloe. Light, non-greasy and virtually free!

EVOO is a good one very moisturizing.

Sometimes I buy my jojoba oil at Whole Foods, it's fairly decent price wise. And for my EVOO I buy the 365 Whole Foods brand. Hemp oil is another awsome oil but, it is usually pricey. Mountain Rose herbs is another great place to buy oils- I LOVE their rosehip seed oil.

Other then that I watch sales and take notes on prices at little local health food stores. When I see a good deal I stock up.

I like my aloe in the summer when my skin isn't super dry.

If you can find some Goat Milk soap, try that! It is great for dry skin - but yes, also avoid using soap at all on areas that don't need it. Zum bars are available at some health food stores and they are great.

I use jojoba oil right out of the shower while skin is still wet and then after it soaks in I apply lotion over the top. My skin is extremely dry in some areas and the oil or lotion alone isn't enough - but together it works great

good luck

yes! you can absolutely use EVOO on your face. if you want to toss all your face stuff out and save mucho dinero go OCM instead. i've been doing it for quite a while now and almost never need anything else on my face unless it's bitterly cold/windy/dry out for an extended period of time.

Oil Cleansng Method

Lots of threads on it here on MDC, but basically just use oil to clean your face with, wipe on, wipe off.

Hmmm......sounds interesting. So just wipe on and wipe off, no rinsing with water?

in addition to the oil cleansing method (which is great on grungy kid scalps!), eat more fat. . . .lots more. we use coconut oil, since the kids hair is so nearly white that olive oil would turn it green. also, you can put a bit of diluted vegetable glycerin or honey on the skin (both humectant) and get a humidifier or 3 (I see tons of them at goodwill, and they're easy to sterilize).

Really, eating more fat and oiling the body are ancient traditions. The ancient Greeks and Romans had a specialized tool to scrape off excess oil- it was a sharp, curved piece of copper.
