Daniel and I are going with DH and the youth group to the Youth Gathering in New Orleans this summer.hat's a good carrier for carrying a toddler around New Orleans in the summer?

The only thing I've only used with any regularity is a Maya Wrap.

I actually have an old style Ergo I got for five bucks at a thrift store, but I've never used it. I can carry a two-year-old in that?

If it fits you and your 2 year old, why not? I would definitely recommend a soft structured carrier of some sort. It will transfer the weight to your hips, and be nice and quick for up-downs. We used SSCs on vacation this last summer to carry my 3.5 year old.

yeah, i agree with the SSC recommendation, definitely. you should try out the ergo you've got and see if it's comfy for you to wear him, and to build up the babywearing muscles necessary to wear an older toddler for longer periods of time if you dont' do that normally.

but you might also want to consider bringing (or buying when you get there) a cheap umbrella stroller. New Orleans in the summer is flippin' HOT and HUMID and you guys might need a break from being sweaty on each other at a time when he doesn't feel like walking. i almost never suggest stroller usage, but i was in New Orleans once in early September and it was so hot that the second i walked out of the hotel i would be drenched in sweat, wearing a tank top and shorts. and i live in a house without air conditioning so it's not like i'm a wuss when it comes to heat either.

I thought about taking our umbrella stroller, but we'll be spending a lot of time in the... um, I don't have my paper... whatever the domed stadium is there. I figured it probably wouldn't be stroller friendly.

I'd vote for an Ergo or SSC as well, very easy for the up and down, no bulk, no straps to worry about dragging on the ground or getting stepped on, etc. Plus the Ergo has a backpack that can attach to it and some other accessories too, so you'll have even less to carry. Sure, it should be no problem with a 2yo.

I would bring the Ergo as well. I carry my nearly 2 year old in my Patapum all the time. (It is pretty much an Ergo knock off) You could also use a frame backpack if you want to get him a little off your back to keep both of you cooler too. It wouldn't be nearly as easy to pack and store, but it would most likely feel much better to wear if you will have him on your back a lot of the time.

Have fun!!
