Infant question

Is it possible for an intact infant to be retractable from birth? Not forced not red irritated painful etc.
Last night during my 3month olds bath he had an erection he then grabbed it and probably 90-95% of the glands was exposed. He was happily grinning and cooing so I know he wasnt uncomfortable. I wasnt expecting him to be able to do that till at least potty training Is that really unusual?

It sure it possible. All boys are different and in fact erections and such are part of how that process happens. All you really need to do is replace it for him if and when that happens.

: And don't ever try to retract or let anyone try to retract. The owner is the only person who should retract.

From what I've read it is possible but rare.

Anatomical studies show that the process of cleavage between the FS and the glans starts before birth. The age of retractability is probably like a normal bell curve, a few percent become retractable very early, a few percent do not become retractable till very late (say, early adulthood), and most, somewhere in the middle. Furthermore, your son might be mostly retractable now, but some areas of connection might remain for a lot longer. In short, it's a very variable process and there's a wide range of normal.

Also, even tho he's retractable, you yourself do not need to deliberately retract him to clean underneath. When he's old enough to follow instructions (say age 4-5) he can learn to do this himself occasionally. Just keep washing off the outside, let him swish it around in clean tub water however he wishes, use common sense, and otherwise, just leave it alone.

Yes, it is normal. DS2 was retractable at birth. He has always had a very long and loose foreskin which made poopy diaper changes a nightmare. I had no choice but to gently retract when cleaning. There was no resistance and it obviously was not painful.

His mild Hypospadia explains it partly, I imagine. In addition to a very long/ loose foreskin, my DS has an almost non-existent frenulum. His ped. thought at first he might have hypospadia, but his glans is completely normal. The ped. just couldn't imagine that he would have such a long foreskin and there not be a problem. Maybe TMI...but he has a long penis as well and needs every bit of that foreskin when erect. It just boils down to the fact that every child is different. I suppose it's mostly genetic, however DS sure doesn't get the endowment gene from his dad :

DS's foreskin would baloon when he peed around 1 mo old, and when wiping his penis at diaper change it was obviously not attached to the glans any more just a few weeks later. When he was maybe 9 mos old, he somehow retracted himself, so I know by then that it was for sure for sure 100% retractable. I've never seen him do it since then, though.
