Wool softening with Lanolin

Thread Starter
Has anyone tried softening wool with Lansinoh Lanolin? I heard that this works but I'm scared I will mess up the hat I am trying to soften. Any suggestions? I thought this might be a better alternative to hair conditioner.

You won't mess it up. But you could try a vinegar rinse first. That might do the trick. I'd suggest using a tiny amount of lanolin, because I wouldn't want to wear a heavily lanolized hat on my head! Great for mittens, socks, and soakers, but not great for the hair do.

Melt a small amount of lanolin in a cup of very hot/boiling water. (I use a baby spoon. For a hat, I'd use maybe a 1/4 t.) When it's cool enough to pick up the cup, stir in about a few teaspoons of shampoo (I use baby shampoo.) The liquid should be whitish and the lanolin should have disappeared (not in clumps at the top.) When the lanolin is luke warm, it's ready.

Gently wash your hat. Lay it in a basin (wet), and pour the lanolin mixture over it. Gently squeeze the lanolin through the hat. The hotter your lanolin mixture, the gentler you have to be with it. Just let it sit 15 minutes-a few hours. Rinse in cool water, and block.
