Rotateq and Kawasaki

1. Sanofi Pasteur MSD: "RotaTeq®". Information/package insert October 2008.
2. Geier DA, King PG, Sykes LK, Geier MR: RotaTeq vaccine adverse events and policy considerations. Med Sci Monit 2008; 14: H9-16.

So, there was a higher incidence of Kawasaki amongst the babies who received Rota compared to the control group (5:1). Of course they say it's statistically insignificant.

Being trained as a researcher myself in social science, I know how easily you can present something as significant or insignificant, depending on the outcome you want. Never trust statistics that you didn't tamper yourself, it's a saying among social scientists in Europe...

That's OK. There is another rotavirus vaccine that has just been approved --

A second rotavirus vaccine (Rotarix; GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals) has been licensed; the dosing schedules for Rotarix and RotaTeq have been synchronized so that the first dose of either one can be administered at ages 6 weeks through 14 weeks (JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Jul 30 2008).

Rotarix is being used in Europe already for a while. My nephew received it, as my sister vaccinates him for everything on the market.
I personally wouldn't vax for Rota, it's not scary at all, especially if you live in a clean house with running water.. Friend of mine is a ped nurse, she thinks it's ridic. The worst with Rota is dehydration that requires an IV in the hospital, which see saw very rarely.
