Should I replace my filling?

I had an amalgam filling put in this August by a dentist who felt it was my only chance of avoiding a root canal : I have since found a new dentist and I am in LOVE He would like to replace it but said that we have to wait at least 6 months to let the tooth "calm down" from the trauma of the huge filling otherwise I could still end up with a root canal.

So, as far as whether or not to replace it, what would you do?

It's my only filling if that makes a difference...

Pro Removal

IMO I definitely think it is worth getting the mercury out. My amalgam fillings have cracked my teeth, which led to further decay under the mercury filling. If you aren't pregnant or trying to conceive I would get it out as soon as your dentist thinks it is safe. If you can find a dentist who uses precautions to keep your mercury exposure to a minimum.
