I want to smack the doctors quoted in that article! If mother and baby health is the #1 concern, then why aren't they trying to make hospitals safer? And do they really think we choose homebirth because it's "trendy" or "cause celebre"? Get over yourselves!

"Childbirth decisions should not be dictated or influenced by what's fashionable, trendy, or the latest cause celebre," the obstetricians' policy statement says. "Despite the rosy picture painted by home birth advocates, a seemingly normal labor and delivery can quickly become life-threatening for both the mother and baby."
Oh, give me a break!! Homebirth was around LONG before hospitals!! The human species managed to survive . Do they think midwives have no training at all?? Most are capable of handling emergencies.

Oh, and this gem:
Quote:
Midwives' fees for home births are often less than a third of the hospital cost, in part because the mothers generally don't receive epidural anesthesia or various other medical interventions at home.
I at that!! You mean, some DO?

I just think it is so ridiculous that instead of offering women the births they want and deserve in a hospital or birth center setting to compete with homebirth, some OBs would rather just make everyone who supports HB look like a lunatic and outlaw it.

It just proves that rather than face the fact that women are leaving hospitals because of their evidence-free practices, OBs would rather dodge that issue and blame the victims--We women are so shallow that we do home births to be "trendy."

Oh, right. I forgot that I only had my son at home because I wanted to be trendy. Of course, making choices about childbirth is just like shopping for a new purse! Hmm, maybe that's the problem - we women are not supposed to have choices! Gosh, I must have forgotten what century we're in!
