Just realized my 4.75 yr old hasn't nursed in days . . . or weeks?!

Wow, not sure when exactly! I knew he was on the way to weaning when he started skipping days here and there, but I just didn't realize it would go so quickly (he was still nursing daily at 4.5 yrs). I realize he might not be completely done, since his sister would ask every few weeks at the end of her nursing journey, but wow, kind of bittersweet.

On that note, I've been in a funk the last few days, unexplainable sad/grumpiness. I DO have PMS this week, but have wondered if the weaning is in any way contributing . . .

Hehe, I was just coming to post that it can't be possible that your .75 year old (so that would mean 9 month old) is weaning.

My guy, arrived May of '04, has been going through a very slow process of weaning. Since I only have him, I was able to keep a little emailed note each time he asked, but even with just him I forget to do it sometimes!

Anyway, he just went 20 full days since nursing...then last night asked for a bit at bedtime. Asked for some milk, I asked if he was sure as I keep thinking he's done, he said no, that he likes having milk "from your nipples", LOL. Silly kid.

So if he does ask again, write it down, just in case he doesn't ask again. If not, at least you know when you realized he hadn't asked in awhile, and that's worth quite a lot!:

Oh, and I've been going through quite a lot of weird emotions too, that I put solely onto this slow end of nursing. I'm very sensitive to hormones, so this change has been hard on me!

Thanks - I remember my DD skipping 3 weeks once during her weaning, too.

DS is sick right now, and tonight he asked for nuh-nuh again He's almost forgotten how to latch, and it didn't last long, but he did nurse (and now I can make a note).

Thanks!

Of course, now I'm dealing with plugged ducts on one side and dull aches in the other . . . I really didn't expect this as slowly as his weaning has gone, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised since this is the first time in 6.5 years that nobody is nursing regularly! I started the lecithin today, though. I can't believe he's almost done!

When Maya finished in December I had *major* hormonal stuff happening. Of course I'm pregnant, too, but I'm sure some of it related to the absence of *any* nursing.

It took weeks, by the way, for me to feel like my breasts were no longer needing to nurse. (That said, pregnancy is really messing with me, so who knows what's related to what!)

It is exactly that, bittersweet. :-)

Just an update: after trying everything possible to keep these plugged ducts at bay, it turned to mastitis anyway . . . and after trying to avoid antibiotics in every way possible, I had to start them last night after fever and red streaking set in. This side-effect of his weaning is now officially THE hardest part of my nursing career ever!

Youch.

I've been sick since last week, and on Friday or Saturday I was having massive pain in the breast that DS hadn't nursed from in well over a month. Along with how sick I can get (when I get sick I do it up right...delerium, near fainting, the whole nine yards, I'm super-fun!) the massive pain in my breast was too much to take, and I called DS in to have him nurse. Thankfully he was willing, and he nursed while I massaged that lumpy area, and just as soon as I was going to tell him that he could stop, he knew he was done, and he stopped on his own. It was excellent.

If he had refused, I don't know what I would have done...probably wold have had to get to the MDs for abx I'm sure; I can't believe how much it hurt!

Abx did finally clear mine up, but I will confess to having DH help move the blockage along : DS will nurse occasionally, but his latch is so poor it's not much good for unblocking things. DH to the rescue!

Glad to hear yours is clearing up without antibiotics!
