Shipping prices with Ikea?

Hello!

We need a new bed frame and I found a great one from Ikea. The closest Ikea is about 3 hours away so I'd like to have it shipped. Does anyone know how much we are looking at paying for shipping? Anyone bought anything big-ish like that from Ikea online?

TIA!

You can figure it out by starting your order online. Once you enter your zip code it should give you an estimate. Be prepared to pay $100+. At least last time I quoted something it was almost twice the cost, once they added shipping. Stinks, cause the closest Ikea to me is Tempe, AZ. Dh is flying there next week, I just wish he could bring me back some furniture

Yeah, it was stupid expensive to ship. My husband and I just rented a van for the day and drove up there to get all the stuff we wanted. Even with the rental costs and the gas, it was still much, much cheaper than what they wanted to ship for. Sometimes you can go in with other people on a rental vehicle if they are interested.

Ikea shipping can be a bit ridiculous so be prepared. Lots of their furniture items come in multiple boxes adding to the cost of shipping. I've gone thru the whole checkout procedure (without sending my order) and have been able to get a *quote* of shipping. Remember even though you live a few hrs from an ikea that dosent mean that they are shipping it from there but their warehouse. And depending on the item you may be getting it from the east coast. We ended up always just driving to ikea making a day trip out of it and get everything we wanted (lot less expensive in our case) plus we got to see lots of things that they have in store and not online. Plus sometimes things look nice online but once you see them in the showroom they arnt what you expected or vice versa.

Thanks!

How can I make sure the one I am going to will have what I am looking for? Do I call and have them set it aside for me?

I've heard that some stores do that, but the two I called flat out refused to do that for me. It ended up not mattering because they had what we were looking for anyway.

On their website there is a searchable store inventory (right hand side of page when you look at an item's description). It checks in real-time for the store that you select. I do not know if a store will put something on hold for you, but if it's a long drive, I'd call to double check that they had a couple in stock.

Thank so much again!

I went and put what I wanted into my cart and such (tried it before and it didn't work then) and holy cow! The shipping costs only $20 less than the bed! We will definitely be going to pick it up.

Pssst.....I heard they are offering free breakfasts this weekend. :

I just wanted to say yeah that to going and picking it up yourself. We live about 30 minutes from the closest IKEA but didn't have a truck at the time so we ordered a dresser online. The dresser was $300 and the shipping was $300!!!!! The dresser wasn't being shipped from the store 30 minutes away but from Montreal (about 8 hours away). It would have been waaaay cheaper to rent a truck and drive there ourselves.

We ended up getting it but I would never do it again. Plus, when I ordered it (had to do it over the phone) they messed up and ordered 2 instead of 1 and it was a total nightmare to fix. I love IKEA but will never ever order online or over the phone again.

They refused when I asked.

Plus, going to IKEA is kind of an experience in and of it's self... DH and I used to drive to Minneapolis from Madison and shop there. It's like our own little mini Scandanavian Vacation. We get the 98 cent breakfast and a couple of cheap cookies and let the kids play in their play area while we shop. So it can be the sort of thing you make a day of, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

In case you still want to shop--I bought DD a beautiful bed from jcpenney.com--they were having a huge sale and had free shipping. So, I paid no shipping (would have been slightly over $100) and then I bought the mattress locally.

I have never bought anything big from Penney's before, but I would totally recommend it.

: our closest ikea is also about 3 hours away and we LOVE taking a day trip up there! although we never take the kids with us......they stay with grandma. we could spend HOURS going through all the things there! we get up there fairly often.....3 times in the past year. their shipping costs are incredibly high, so i would say, "ROAD TRIP!"

The problem with making a day trip of Ikea is I am preggers with twins and actually on bed rest right now. I can't imagine feeling up to it any time soon (and I need that bed frame as I am sleeping on a mattress on the floor and I am not comfy to say the least). We're also thinking of getting a couch and maybe a bookcase so I'd love to go as DH has no idea what I like and is fine with stacking books in milk crates and sitting on bean bag chairs so I'm a little nervous. BUT I think if I print out what I am okay with and he has a cell then yeah we should do okay.

I would love to go though.

another option is to contact someone who lives near an ikea and they can ship it (for much less than Ikea would) to you. If you are planning to get all that other stuff that you just mentioned in the last post it may be your best be to print out what you want and have him make the trek by himself so he has the space to bring it back home. We always run into that problem when we go to Ikea!

My dp and I LOVE Ikea - we go to the one near Newark Airport - sit in the viewing deck/cafe and watch planes land. We make a day trip out of it (his mom lives in NYC so it's a pretty easy and cheap trip for us). We can spend a whole day there! Shipping is way to expensive from Ikea - it's not worth it for us. It's too bad you can't make a trip - it's a great experience! Dp often bribes me with a trip to Ikea - IE: Babe, if you drive to the city on our next trip, we can go to Ikea.

I guess I'm the odd one out, LOL, I recommend having it shipped if it's an option for you.

We ordered the Ektorp 3 seater sofa, replacement cover for it, the Ektorp overstuffed style chair and ottoman and the replacement covers for those. The sofa was 1 big piece, with custions being in another box. We paid about $300 (little less?) to have it shipped to Jax FL. My nearest IKEA was 5-6 hrs away, so I thought the shipping wasn't bad. It came on a truck, they brought it in my house and helped me get it in place.

I think it was about $1200 total for all that. We might have bought the covers on a trip up there actually, can't remember. Anyway, I felt $1200 for a large sofa, big overstuffed chair and matching ottoman wasn't bad, compared to what I was pricing locally.

I'd check the prices of having it shipped from the store vs ordering it online and having it shipped that way. It was way cheaper for us to have it shipped via online order.

I just ordered my loveseats (2) and the shipping was almost the price of one couch. But it was worth the aggravation to me.. LOL
