Sewing prefolds/flats questions

Thread Starter
I'm looking at buying my own organic fabric to make flats or prefolds, but I have a couple questions:
  • which do you prefer, flats or prefolds?
  • do you prefer cotton or hemp blends for diapers?
  • how big should I make them (what dimensions?) to last the longest (preferably NB all the way to PL)?
  • how much fabric should I figure each one would take?
  • how many should I expect to need (i.e. how much fabric should I buy)?

Thanks for any help...

If you want to use the same diapers, flats may be a better bet. The other advantage is that they dry faster. Prefolds come in two basic sizes: infant and regular. Let me know if you'd like me to post the measurements for the diapers.

If you use cotton birdseye, you will be able to close the diaper with a Snappi. Other materials, you will need to test it to see if it's Snappi-able or use pins.

Bamboo velour may be a nice option if you can find it. I like hemp blend fabrics too because they tend to work better in carseats, high chairs, etc. There are several Yahoo co-ops that you can join to purchase diaper making fabrics.
